Today we recognize World Sickle Cell Awareness Day, shining a light on sickle cell disease (SCD) and the impact it has on patients and families across the world.

SCD is a genetic blood disorder that causes red blood cells to become hard and shaped like a crescent, making it harder for blood to flow, which leads to pain and other severe health complications. This disorder disproportionately affects communities of color.

Today, we honor the strength of those living with this lifelong disease. Join MCCPF and MaineHealth Pediatric Cancer Care, Blood Disorders, IV Therapies, as we continue advocating for better treatments and support for patients here in Maine.

⚾ Meet Malachi, our 2026 Slugger Kid! ⚾

In March 2025, what seemed like the flu quickly turned into something much more serious. After weeks without improvement, a trip to urgent care led to an emergency transfer to Barbara Bush Children's and a diagnosis no family is ever prepared to hear: leukemia.

Malachi was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) and immediately began intensive chemotherapy. His journey included critical complications and time in the PICU, but through every challenge, he faced it with incredible courage and determination.

Today, Malachi continues his recovery, and his family remains deeply grateful for the compassionate care they received from their doctors, nurses, and support staff who stood beside them every step of the way.

Now, Malachi is stepping up to the plate as our 2026 Slugger Kid! ⚾ As the face of our Strike Out Cancer in Kids campaign, presented by Capozza Floor Covering Center, he'll join Slugger The Sea Dog and the Portland Sea Dogs throughout the season to help raise awareness and critical funds for the Maine Children's Cancer Program Fund.

Together, Malachi and Slugger will be a powerful team, sharing the mission of striking out childhood cancer and supporting local children and families facing a cancer diagnosis. Every dollar raised through their season-long fundraising efforts helps ensure Maine kids can continue receiving the world-class care, support, and hope they need close to home.

⚾ Meet Emma, this Saturday's Hero at Hadlock! ❤️

Emma was just 5 years old and only two weeks into kindergarten when she was diagnosed with B-cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (B-ALL). After being treated for strep throat, her family became concerned when her paleness wasn't improving. Then, during soccer practice, Emma came off the field crying after just 10 minutes because she was too tired to keep playing. A few days later, she began cancer treatment.

What followed were months of chemotherapy, lumbar punctures, hospital stays, and some very hard days. Through it all, Emma amazed everyone around her with her positivity and sense of humor. She practiced jokes with her care team, held silly dance parties in her hospital room, found joy in getting her nails done after appointments, and approached wigs and head wraps with curiosity and confidence.

One of the brightest moments of Emma's journey came when she returned to school. Her classmates, teachers, and staff welcomed her back wearing Team Emma shirts, hats, and head wraps to match hers.

Now 6 years old and in maintenance therapy, Emma is back to gymnastics and tennis, has learned to play the ukulele, and mastered riding a bike. This Saturday, she'll take a lap around the bases with Slugger and be recognized during a special pregame ceremony as our Hero at Hadlock.

Purchase your tickets through the link below and help us fill Hadlock Field for Team Emma. A portion of every ticket sold through our link will benefit the Maine Children's Cancer Program Fund and help support Maine children and families facing cancer and blood disorders.

Join Maine Children’s Cancer Program TOMORROW at Hadlock Field as we team up with the Portland Sea Dogs to cheer on Michael, our first Hero at Hadlock for the 2026 Strike Out Cancer in Kids Season! ⚾💛

Michael was your typical 16-year-old enjoying his sophomore year when he was diagnosed in April 2025 with Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH), a rare pediatric cancer. Despite the challenges that come with chemotherapy and treatment, Michael continued doing what he loves most, which is playing on his varsity tennis team with determination and heart.

Thanks to that determination and strength, Michael rang the bell this past April, marking the end of his treatment! Michael’s resilience and positive spirit, which got him through treatment, continue to inspire everyone around him.

Michael and his family would also like to sincerely thank the medical teams at Maine Children's Cancer Program and Barbara Bush Children's for their exceptional care, compassion, and support throughout his journey, along with their family and friends for the endless love, encouragement, and support they received every step of the way.

Buy your ticket for tomorrow's game using the link below, and part of the proceeds will go towards supporting kids like Michael. 🎗️

We’re continuing to celebrate National Nurses Month because who would we be without nurses, not just those who work in our clinic, but all the nurses who dedicate their lives to caring for others. We are so grateful for everything you do! 💛

Meet Pam, another incredible Registered Nurse we’ve been fortunate to have at MCCP for 25 years! Even after all these years, Pam is still inspired most by the time she spends with her patients. Her “littles” (and sometimes not-so-little patients) are what continue to brighten her days. In addition to her role as an RN, Pamela is also a transplant coordinator who has organized bone marrow drives in her local communities over the years.

When Pam isn’t doing the incredible work she does both in and outside the clinic, you can find her enjoying some of her favorite hobbies, including painting, gardening, reading, and taking in all that our beautiful state of Maine has to offer. A fun fact about Pamela: she’s a Baxter State Park superfan and has hiked every trail on Katahdin! ⛰️

Thank you, Pam, and all the nurses out there who continue to be some of the most dedicated members of our communities! 🎗️

🎗️International Cancer Research Month 🎗️

This month is all about progress, hope, and the power of research. Cancer research is how we move closer to cures, improve treatments, and create better outcomes—especially for children facing childhood cancer.

Every breakthrough starts with support. Every discovery brings us one step closer to a future where kids can spend more time being kids and less time being patients. 💛

You can be part of that progress. Consider donating to Maine Children’s Cancer Program Fund to help support lifesaving research and critical care for children and families right here in Maine.

Together, we can keep hope moving forward!
