They've listened, learned, waited, followed directions, navigated friendships and processed far more than we may ever know.
Then they come home.
Suddenly they're upset over the wrong snack, shoes land in the middle of the floor, and a simple question receives a surprisingly big response.
It's easy to focus on the behavior we can see. But sometimes the more important story is everything that happened during the hours we didn't see.
Children naturally process their experiences through more than words. Movement, play, quiet and connection can all help them move through what their day has held.
TRY TOGETHER: THE BACKPACK DROP
For the first ten minutes home, let more than the backpack come off. Skip the questions. Put on music, offer a snack, step outside, stretch, lie on the floor or simply let them choose what feels good.
You may be surprised what they eventually tell you when you stop trying to get them to tell you.
Sometimes nurturing a child's heart and mind begins by giving them somewhere they can simply land.
