I think, “Well, I can either do this or I can do that.” I choose to get up and try to make it better if I can...

Pain + Resistance = Suffering

According to the Buddhist tradition, suffering occurs when we complain, blame, or indulge in self-pity when trials arise (which they ALWAYS will). The idea isn’t to seek pain. Avoid it if possible. But when the first arrow strikes (pain), avoid the second arrow (resistance).

Sound harsh? These are the words of a dying man. Randy Pausch is known for his “Last Lecture” video. He refused to let circumstances control his actions.

When you take responsibility for your life, you also take back control. Not necessarily of the outcome (Randy eventually passed from his cancer), but in how you deal with whatever situation arises. Responsibility is simply “the ability to respond.” YOU get to choose how you show up.
