Pleased to announce that a manuscript was recently accepted in the Journal of Sickle Cell Disease.

This work was based on our previously published model where Sprague Dawley rats (not transgenic mice) were exchange transfused with human sickle red blood cells. The protocol resulted in tunable severity from localized vaso-occlusive events (VOE) visualized microscopically in the capillary beds, arterioles and venules that range from reduced flow to stagnant aggregate RBCs. Furthermore, tissue oxygenation via phosphorescence quenching microscopy provided a mechanistic correlation between reduced oxygenation and VOEs.

In this article, we demonstrated improved tissue oxygenation using a transdermal curcumin-based product (VAS-101), which reduced, or right shifted, VOEs compared to untreated sham group.

The poster presentation is titled “VS-101, a Next-Generation PEGylated HBOC is a Superior Low-Volume Resuscitation Fluid Compared to Whole Blood in a Severe Swine Hemorrhagic Shock Model”, where VS-101 (PEG-HBOC) is compared against autologous fresh whole blood in a porcine hemorrhagic shock model.

The oral presentation is titled “Evaluation of a Non-Hemoglobin Oxygen Carrier (OMX) in a High-Volume Exchange Transfusion,” where rats are isovolemically hemodiluted with either an oxygen carrier (OMX) or a crystalloid.

This paper in SHOCK was accepted in February, and was available in pre-press, but this week the final version was uploaded.

This work compared a PEG-HBOC against autologous whole blood, fresh pooled plasma and Lactated Ringers'.
