Pleased to announce that a manuscript was recently accepted in the Journal of Sickle Cell Disease.
This work was based on our previously published model where Sprague Dawley rats (not transgenic mice) were exchange transfused with human sickle red blood cells. The protocol resulted in tunable severity from localized vaso-occlusive events (VOE) visualized microscopically in the capillary beds, arterioles and venules that range from reduced flow to stagnant aggregate RBCs. Furthermore, tissue oxygenation via phosphorescence quenching microscopy provided a mechanistic correlation between reduced oxygenation and VOEs.
In this article, we demonstrated improved tissue oxygenation using a transdermal curcumin-based product (VAS-101), which reduced, or right shifted, VOEs compared to untreated sham group.
