Minkoff Center for Jewish Genetics Support to empower you to make informed decisions regarding genetic disorders We currently offer a panel of 105 genetic tests.

Our registration fees range from $25 - $75. The cost of these tests can exceed $3,000 in a private physician's office. Test results are completely confidential. We are also devoted to creating awareness of the increased occurrence of Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (BRCA) Syndrome in the Jewish community. 1:40 individuals of Ashkenazi/Eastern European descent are carriers of mutations in the

ir BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, approximately 10x the frequency of the general population. Both men and women may be carriers and can pass the mutations along to their sons and daughters. A BRCA gene can lead to an up to 80% increased risk of breast cancer and 40% increased risk of ovarian cancer for women. Men with a BRCA gene are at elevated risk for male breast cancer, pancreatic cancer and prostate cancer. The decision to test for BRCA is complex and is best explored with a genetic counselor. When two carriers for the same disorder become parents of children:
• There is a 50% likelihood with each pregnancy that the child will be a carrier (like each parent),
• There is a 25% likelihood with each pregnancy that the child will be affected by the disorder.
• There is a 25% likelihood that the child will be neither a carrier nor affected by the disorder.
If both parents are found to be carriers for the same disorder, it is very important that they seek genetic counseling to learn about options that are available to them to minimize the risk of having an affected child. Genetic counselors are trained to help such families make reproductive decisions that will increase the chances that their children will be healthy. (source: /img1.wsimg.com)
