I can’t tell you how many times over the years I’ve heard some version of:

"I really want to focus on myself again… I just need life to calm down first."

I’ve said it too. Especially at this time of year!

But then commitments (work, family, personal) ramp up, routines change, the dog needs to go to the vet…

… and somehow you slide to the bottom of the list again.

But after 28 years of coaching women and men over 50 juggling their wellness with life’s demands here’s what I know:

For years we were taught that a calorie is a calorie, but researchers are finding that's not the whole story.

There's a growing field called chrononutrition, which is the study of how WHEN you eat affects how your body processes food.

Bottom line: the same meal eaten at night will be processed differently than it would be if you ate it in the morning.

By different, I mean the meal eaten later can lead to:

❌ Lower calorie burn
❌ Increased fat storage
❌ Reduced insulin sensitivity

Your metabolism follows a cycle tied to light, sleep, and your internal clock. Earlier in the day, your body burns more calories processing food. By evening, that process slows down.

3 simple ways to use this:

✅ Make lunch count — don't let it be an afterthought
✅ Keep evening meals lighter when you can

If your belly is noticeably puffier at random times throughout the day…

That's not belly fat. It’s bloating, and the two have their own causes and solutions.

Here's how to tell them apart:

👉 Belly fat doesn't change throughout the day. It's consistent morning to night, and it won't shift based on what you ate or how stressed you feel.

👉 Bloating comes and goes. It tends to show up after eating certain foods, due to hormones, or if you’re stressed. It also can feel tight or uncomfortable.

Why does this matter? Because if you're dealing with bloating and you respond by cutting calories and adding more exercise, you'll feel miserable and see zero results.

Belly fat responds to things like:

✅ Strength training and eating the right amounts of the right foods for your goals

✅ Keeping your blood sugar balanced

✅ Managing stress

Bloating responds to things like:

✅ Identifying the foods or drinks that seem to affect it

✅ Supporting your gut health with fiber and hydration

✅ Slowing down at meals and managing stress

Most people are dealing with some of both. Knowing which one you're looking at changes everything about what to do next.

When I'm coming back after a vacation, I know one thing to be true: it can be hard to go back to my old routine!

But I also know something else…

When I put the power of the “Big Mo” in motion, it gets a whole lot easier.

Big Mo = momentum.

You’ve heard the saying, “A body at rest stays at rest, and a body in motion stays in motion.”

That’s actually Newton's First Law of Motion!

And it’s why getting (re)started is so hard. But it’s also why it’s so important to GET started so you can reach the “in motion” stage!

If you're thinking of getting started with your fitness and healthy eating, here’s your sign to get up and get going!

Yes, the first step may be the most challenging. But it’ll get easier. It’s literally physics!

We've been talking all month about working smarter.

There’s a way you do that with your goals, too: make sure they follow the SMART plan!

When you get your goals dialed in, you’ll find new motivation, purpose, and energy to make them happen.

Here’s what I mean:

If your goal is "I want to lose weight"... that’s not really a goal. It’s a wish.

BUT… "I want to lose 8 pounds by Oct. 1 by strength training three times a week and hitting my protein goal daily" is a plan.

One keeps you stuck while the other gets you moving.

SMART goals are:

✅ Specific: What exactly are you working toward?

✅ Measurable: How exactly will you know when you've reached it?

✅ Attainable: Is it truly possible, given your timeline and the tools you have available?

✅ Realistic: Can you do it? If you're juggling five commitments right now, it might not be the right time to train for a marathon.

✅ Time-bound: When is your deadline? (This one is one of the biggest motivators!)

Take 5 minutes right now and run your biggest goal through the SMART setup.

Then, put it into action!

Now you're not just wishing… you’ve got a plan to work smarter and make those goals a reality.
