“How long is my prescription valid?” 🤔

Prescription expiration dates can vary depending on the type of medication and state regulations, but here are some general guidelines:

đź’Š Most non-controlled prescriptions are valid for up to 1 year from the date your provider writes them

đź’Š Controlled substances often expire much sooner and may have stricter refill rules

đź’Š Even if refills remain, some prescriptions cannot legally be filled after their expiration date

Keep in mind❗️The expiration date on the prescription itself is different from the expiration date on the medication bottle. Once dispensed, medications may have separate “use by” dates depending on the medication type.

What is a PA… and what happens if your prescription needs one? 🤔💊

If you’ve ever been told your medication “needs a PA,” you’re not alone. Let’s break it down:

PA = Prior Authorization

This means your insurance company needs extra approval before they’ll cover a medication.

So what happens next?

When your prescription requires a PA:
1. We notify your provider because your doctor’s office is responsible for submitting the PA to your insurance.
2. Insurance reviews the request which can take anywhere from a few days to over a week.
3. You’ll get a decision if it’s been approved or denied.

What can YOU do to help speed things up?

• Follow up with your provider’s office
• Make sure your insurance info is up to date
• Ask about alternative options if needed
