Your gut and your brain are talking. 🗣️
All day. Every day. ♾️
So how does your gut communicate with your brain? 👇🏼

🦠Your gut microbes produce metabolites.
🦠Your immune system gets involved.
🦠Your nervous system connects the two.
🦠And it works both ways.

Your gut and brain aren't separate systems. They're in constant conversation. 🧬💬🧠

What might that conversation mean for our mental health? 🌱
That’s next weeks post. ⏰

Nutrition for your Mental Health: What should you put on your plate? 🍽️

Your brain and your gut are in constant communication.
And one of the ways we can support that connection might be simpler than you thought: Feed your gut microbes well. 🦠

So what does that look like on your plate?
Lots of different plants 🫘🍊🍆🥝
Eat the rainbow 🍎🥕🍌🫑🫐
Include fermented foods 🥛🫙🥒
Choose brain-supportive fats 🌰🥜
Make ultra-processed foods a smaller part of your overall intake 🍩🍔🍟
The takeaway?
When we're talking about nutrition and mental health, we're not looking for one magical "brain food." Instead, we're looking at the overall dietary pattern and feeding the trillions of microbes that help connect the gut and brain.

Start simple: What is one more plant food you could add to your plate today? 🌱

Next up: Why does feeding your gut matter to your brain? 🧠

Mental Health Series. 🧠

What if improving your diet could support your mental health? 🧐

That's exactly why the emerging field of nutritional psychiatry is so interesting. Research has consistently found that higher-quality dietary patterns are associated with a lower risk of depression. 🙌🏻

Just as exciting, the research shows it isn’t just about weight loss. It goes deeper than the numbers on the scale! ⚖️

Food isn't a replacement for therapy 🛋️, medication 💊 , or other mental health treatment 👩🏾‍⚕️. But increasingly, the research suggests that nutrition deserves a place in the conversation about mental health. 🍓

Can nutrition affect your mental health?

The research says... yes. ✅

Not because food can "cure" anxiety or depression.

But because nutrition plays a role in how our brains function, how we produce neurotransmitters, how we regulate inflammation, and even how our gut communicates with our brain. 🥗🍝🌯💭🧠

Over the next few weeks, we'll explore what the science actually says about nutrition 🥒 and mental health 🫂, including what we know 💯, what we don't know 🤷🏻‍♀️, and how to separate evidence from hype. 🕵🏽‍♀️

Because your brain deserves to be nourished, too. 💖

Stay tuned. ⏰

When you hear "dietitian," what comes to mind? 💭

Weight loss?

Medical Nutrition Therapy is so much more than that. ‼️

Registered Dietitians provide evidence-based nutrition care to help prevent, manage, or improve conditions like diabetes, heart disease, IBS, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, GERD, celiac disease, PCOS/PMOS, fertility concerns, pregnancy, eating disorders, kidney disease, cancer, autoimmune conditions, food allergies, and more.

And here's something many people don't know:
Many insurance plans cover Medical Nutrition Therapy—but only when it's provided by a Registered Dietitian.

Nutrition isn't just about changing your weight.

It's about improving your health. 🤍

I spend a lot of time talking about vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and building healthy habits.

But I also believe food is about more than nutrients.

It's about gathering with others. It's about supporting local businesses. And sometimes it's about eating a really great burger. (Or veggie burger! Or sweet potato fries!)

If you haven't tried Meme's Burgery yet, they're coming to Searcy today, July 1, and I can't recommend them enough. They're passionate about what they do, and their burgers have earned statewide recognition—including multiple People's Choice awards and the Arkansas Food Hall of Fame People's Choice honor. It's easy to see why.

Healthy eating isn't about never enjoying foods like this. It's about what we do most of the time while still making room for foods and experiences that bring us joy.

So if you're looking for a fun meal this week, check them out! Then return to your usual routine.

That's what balance looks like. 🍔❤️

P.S. In case you were wondering, that perfect burger is in fact a real photo of a burger from memesburgery 😍❤️‍🔥

One Year Later

Over the past year, I've had the privilege of working with individuals and families pursuing better health 🧘🏽‍♀️, stronger performance 🏃🏻, improved labs 🔬 , symptom relief 🙆🏻‍♀️, fertility support 👩🏾‍🍼, and a more peaceful relationship with food, 🥕🍰🍆🥗🍣🍦

Whether you've been a patient, referred a friend, shared a post, or simply encouraged me along the way, thank you so much for trusting me to part of your journey. 🤍

This first year has exceeded anything I imagined. 🥹❣️ ~Amy

I'm excited to share that I've moved into a new office space at 404 North Spruce Street in Searcy, right off the square! 🥳

One of my favorite features of the new office is something surprisingly simple: a window.

This reminds me that nourishment comes in many forms. Of course, food matters—but so does movement 🏃🏻‍♀️‍➡️, sleep 💤 , relationships 🫂, purpose ❣️, and the spaces where we spend our time. 📍

Here's to good nutrition, a little more sunshine, and creating an environment that helps us thrive.
Let's nourish our bodies, not just fuel them. 🥰🤍

This came up in a conversation with a sweet client last week while I was checking in on how she was doing.

I think so many people have been taught that improving their health must mean giving up joy: No favorite foods. No meals out. No dessert. No rest. No flexibility. 🙅🏻‍♀️

And movement is often framed the same way:
Something to “earn” food. Something purely punishing. Something disconnected from joy. 🙂‍↕️

As though pleasure and health exist on opposite sides of a scale.
But I don’t believe that’s true. ❌

Movement can be challenging, sweaty, exhausting, restorative, playful, strengthening, or calming — while still being deeply enjoyable and meaningful. 🤍

And a nourishing life can still include birthday cake 🎂, laughter around the dinner table, coffee with a friend ☕️, foods tied to culture and memory, and meals that simply taste good. 🤤

The healthiest habits are often the ones that leave room for both well-being and being human. ✨

“Food” is defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary as:

“material consisting essentially of protein, carbohydrate, and fat used in the body of an organism to sustain growth, repair, and vital processes and to furnish energy.”

I love this definition because it reminds us what food is actually supposed to do: support life, nourish the body, provide energy, and help us function well. 🌟

Somewhere along the way, nutrition became heavily tied to marketing instead of nourishment. And somewhere along the way, we forgot what food actually is. 🙂‍↕️

Many ultra-processed products are now sold as “healthy” simply because they are:
• high protein
• low carb
• zero sugar
• keto
• low calorie

But a product being marketed for weight loss does not mean it’s nourishing. 🗣️

Sometimes these products leave people bloated or constipated, more preoccupied with food, less satisfied, and disconnected from basic hunger/fullness cues. 😵‍💫

Whole foods tend to do something many ultra-processed “diet foods” struggle to do:
they nourish and satisfy at the same time. 🙌🏻

This does not mean every processed food is “bad.”

Convenience matters. Accessibility matters. Real life matters. 💯

But nutrition is about more than clever packaging and front-label claims. ‼️

Sometimes the healthiest choice is not the snack with the loudest marketing.

Sometimes it is simply real food.
Because nutrition is healthcare.
And health is about more than chasing the next diet trend. 💖
