Always and forever love these emails that come in after something a patient has been training for, for a long time 👊🏼 “I swam from Asia to Europe.
My time was one hour 26 minutes and 12 seconds.
I managed to win the lottery to enter the 38th annual Cross Continental Swim in Istanbul, Turkey. The swim crosses the Bosphorous Strait, the busiest waterway on earth which is closed for two hours by the Turkish Olympic committee and Coast Guard. You swim from the Asian side of Istanbul 6 1/2 km to the European side assisted by the current flowing from the Black Sea.
They are very strict allowing no wet suits, training watches, they even checked all of our fingernails to make sure they weren’t too long. I’ve never swam in the ocean before and the water was a beautiful sky blue with some harmless pink jellyfish although with about a mile to go I ran into some pretty heavy wind driven chop which made it hard to breathe and see where I was going.Three hundred yards from the finish platform you hit a reverse current but I had learned to push myself when I’m tired so I made it in and up the ladder.
I trained for one year and this last winter I spent over 100 hours in the pool to improve my technique including bilateral breathing, raising my feet, improving my catch and rotation and sighting in open water. Once a week I swam in Martha Lake and when I first started the water was 50° and my teeth were chattering driving home even with the heated seats and heat blasting. I’ve never considered myself a a strong swimmer and I was really nervous and hardly slept the night before but it’s good to do something that you’re afraid to do because if you can succeed it’s the best feeling in the world.
I’ve learned that if you set a goal with a specific date and stay focused you can achieve almost anything.
Many thanks to my original Total Immersion swimming coach Julie Denmark, my open water swimming coach Guila Muir and my sports medicine expert Dr. Adam Pourcho.”
