I think support groups get an unfair reputation.

Yes, some groups are unhelpful.
But others can provide validation, education, practical coping tools, humor and genuine connection. 💚

Interestingly, research has linked stronger social support in rheumatoid arthritis with better coping and quality of life (see citations below).

What has your experience been like - have you also found social support communities like the Arthritis Foundation’s Connect Groups helpful? Let us know!

POV: You spend the day talking about arthritis awareness on local news… then celebrate Green Heart Fridays at a Mariners game 💚⚾

Advocacy can look serious sometimes.

But it can also look like community, laughter, visibility, connection, and finding joy alongside hard things.

So grateful to everyone helping spread awareness that arthritis affects people of all ages and is far more than “just joint pain.”

Today is World Autoimmune and Autoinflammatory Arthritis Day! 💚I’m joining in spreading awareness about

One of the biggest misconceptions about “arthritis” is that it’s just one disease, or simply “wear and tear.”

But “arthritis” literally just means joint inflammation, and it can happen as a result of over 100 different conditions.

While osteoarthritis is the most common form and is often related to aging or injury, autoimmune and autoinflammatory forms of arthritis are **systemic** diseases that can affect the **entire** body, not just the joints.

These include conditions like:
• Rheumatoid arthritis (RA)
• Psoriatic arthritis (PsA)
• Ankylosing spondylitis (AS)
• Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA)
• Systemic juvenile idiopathic arthritis (SJIA)

Other autoimmune diseases like lupus, Crohn’s disease, and ulcerative colitis can also cause inflammatory arthritis.

I’ve been living with rheumatoid arthritis for 23 years and working as an occupational therapist for over a decade, and I’m passionate about helping people better understand these conditions and feel less alone.

What’s the biggest misconception you’ve heard about autoimmune arthritis? Let me know in the comments, and be sure to share your story for and tag and

Someone recently asked me how I stay “positive” while living with rheumatoid arthritis.

The truth is quite the paradox, because….I don’t magically avoid negative thoughts or even fight with them.

I’ve learned that automatic thoughts are out of my control, but crucially, I *can* control how I respond to those thoughts.

For example, I can simply acknowledge that they are thoughts and not facts, and let those thoughts float away like clouds.

Alternately, if they are really bothering me, I can recognize that they are often coming from my distorted “shoulder critic.”

Then, I can call upon my “shoulder coach” (aka “shoulder angel”) to provide an alternate perspective that’s more self-compassionate.

This is just one of the many tools that’s helped me cope with RA, anxiety, stress, and uncertainty over the years.

If you’d like to learn more, I have a full *free* webinar training where I delve deeper into the 3 most important ways I’ve found to reduce stress while living with RA, including tools for uncomfortable thoughts that *aren’t* distorted.
