Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) is an independent research center at UW Vision: All people living long lives in full health.

An independent population health research organization based at the University of Washington School of Medicine, the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) works with collaborators around the world to develop timely, relevant, and scientifically valid evidence that illuminates the state of health everywhere. In making our research available and approachable, we aim to inform health pol

icy and practice in pursuit of our vision: all people living long lives in full health. Mission: IHME delivers to the world timely, relevant, and scientifically valid evidence to improve health policy and practice. Research: IHME’s research is organized around answering three critical questions that are essential to understanding the current state of population health and the strategies necessary to improve it. What are the world's major health problems? How well is society addressing these problems? How do we best dedicate resources to maximize health improvement? At the same time, we are expanding the field of health metrics by training the next generation of global health leaders in a science that is both accountable and transparent. We are also commited to data transparency and sharing and have launched the Global Health Data Exchange (GHDx) where methods and results will be freely accessible to all. Thanks to long-term funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and support from the state of Washington, we have been able to set an ambitious agenda for the Institute.

A new study published in The Lancet Public Health (The Lancet) found that 2.71 billion people were exposed to secondhand smoke (SHS) in 2023, including 1.49 billion women and 767 million children under 15. While global exposure rates have declined since 1990, the number of people exposed has remained largely unchanged.

This research examined nine SHS-linked health outcomes, including cardiovascular diseases, cancers, COPD, lower respiratory infections, type 2 diabetes, otitis media, and asthma. Ischemic heart disease accounted for 12.0 million disability-adjusted life years attributable to SHS, making it the leading contributor to SHS-related health loss in 2023.

We are excited to announce Jamileh Shadid as a recipient of this year’s Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Emerging Researcher Award!

Her research is helping to incorporate personality disorder into the GBD study, strengthening how the disorder is measured and represented. Ms. Shadid’s recent work ties together evidence on the prevalence, mortality, and diagnostic stability of personality disorder, helping build a foundation for understanding its impact across populations.

Healthy life expectancy (HALE) across US counties varied greatly in 2019, with a 21.2-year difference for the total population (a range of 55.1 years to 76.2 years). Research from IHME published in The Milbank Quarterly studied HALE trends at the county level for five racial/ethnic groups:

• Black population: 56.4–79.1 years
• Asian population: 64.9–77.3 years
• Latino population: 60.3–77.0 years
• White population: 55.0–77.3 years
• American Indian and Alaska Native population: 50.1–74.6 years

Between 2019 and 2023, there was a global decline in age-standardized prevalence of untreated caries in permanent teeth (tooth decay), according to recent Global Burden of Disease research published in The Lancet Public Health examining the burden of oral disorders across 204 countries and territories.

There were increases in age-standardized incidence of lip and oral cavity cancer (8.35%) and age-standardized prevalence of orofacial clefts (2.25%).

Sub-Saharan Africa had the greatest declines in both HIV incidence (64.3%) and mortality (74.6%) between 2003 and 2023, while Central Europe, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia recorded the highest increases in incidence rates (232.1%) and mortality rates (37.8%) during this period.

Women drove most of the global health workforce growth between 1990 and 2023, according to new IHME research published in The Lancet Public Health.

In 2023, women made up 80.7% of nurses, 96.0% of midwives, and 89.5% of community health workers worldwide, while accounting for less than half of doctors.

The findings reveal substantial differences in women’s representation across health professions as the global workforce continues to expand.

Gains in life expectancy (LE) were very uneven across racial/ethnic groups in the US between 2000 and 2019. While Black, Asian, and Latino populations saw meaningful increases, White Americans saw a smaller gain, and American Indian and Alaska Native (AIAN) populations saw no net improvement in LE, according to research from IHME published in The Milbank Quarterly.

In addition to examining national trends, authors focused on county-level LE across racial/ethnic groups and found major variations — LE ranged from 64.5 to 91.7 years. Geographic social, economic, and environmental conditions heavily influenced trends across US counties.

A recent Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2023 study from IHME highlights the major health and economic burden of road injuries worldwide.

Motor vehicle crashes accounted for the largest share of injuries and deaths, causing 19.8 million injuries and 518,000 deaths, while pedestrian injuries caused nearly one-third of all road injury deaths.

With road injuries projected to cost the global economy US$1.8 trillion between 2015 and 2030, stronger investment in safer transportation systems, road safety policies, and emergency care will be essential to reduce future deaths and disability.
