Terra has a background of six years advocating against the impacts of military pollution to people, endangered species, and environmentally sensitive areas. She grew up on Whidbey Island, where the juxtaposition of some of the world’s loudest fighter jets training directly over the nation’s first national historical reserve led her to her work against U.S. militarism. She is a firm believer in the necessity of nuclear weapons abolition and the dismantling of military power for sake of our planet and humanity.

"As we age, certain memories grow sharper rather than dimmer. One memory has stayed vivid with me for more than four decades: standing among a million people in New York City on June 12, 1982, calling for a halt to the nuclear arms race.

My husband, Jim, and I traveled to Manhattan to participate in what became the largest political demonstration in American history. The rally coincided with the United Nations Second Special Session on Disarmament and focused on support for the Nuclear Freeze movement, which sought to stop the testing, production, and deployment of nuclear weapons.

I have recalled that day many times over the years while teaching classes on peace and disarmament, more recently those organized by Olympia Peacemaker, Glen Anderson.. Each time, I could still feel the same rush of excitement and hope.

It is one thing to join a crowd and enjoy the companionship of like-minded people. It is something entirely different to emerge from Grand Central Station and walk toward the United Nations on First Avenue, only to discover that every avenue of the five en route was filled with people as far as the eye could see. Looking north and south, there were human beings everywhere."

Thank you to Tacoma Mayor Anders Ibsen for answering our call to re-commit to Mayors for Peace and speak out against a renewed nuclear arms race. Awareness is the foundation of action, and local leaders have long played an important role in amplifying the voices of their communities to turn the tide against nuclear arms racing.

Tacoma has been a member of Mayors for Peace since 2005, joining cities around the world in calling for the prevention of nuclear war and the eventual elimination of nuclear weapons. At tonight’s City Council meeting, Mayor Anders Ibsen and members of City Council reaffirmed Tacoma’s commitment to advancing peace and called upon national leaders to pursue diplomacy, strengthen arms control agreements, reduce the role of nuclear weapons in national security policy, and move toward a world free of nuclear weapons.

Brasin Benjamin
Brasin is a first-generation college student from the Marshall Islands, graduating in Spring 2026 from Eastern Washington University with a B.A. in International Affairs and minors in Communication Studies & Sociology. He was born and raised in the Marshall Islands, and attended Enewetak Elementary School, with family roots from Enewetak Atoll near Runit Atoll, where the impacts of U.S. nuclear testing remain a daily reality. As he was growing up, he saw how rising sea levels, damage to the environment, and the history of nuclear testing affected homes, health, and ways of living. These experiences have motivated him to understand why these problems keep happening for Marshallese communities and their environment. Brasin seeks to find ways to make life better through policy, advocacy, and raising global awareness. He is especially interested in sharing Pacific perspectives, dealing with the ongoing effects of nuclear weapons, and making sure that the struggles of the Marshallese people are better represented and understood.
