Fred Hutch is partnering with KEXP for Music Heals: Beyond Cancer, a day dedicated to the power of music to lift our spirits and heal our souls in the face of cancer. Throughout the day, KEXP will tell the stories shared by members of our community and play the songs that helped them through the healing process.

We are excited to announce that the Pediatric Moving Beyond Cancer to Wellness event, hosted by the Fred Hutch and Seattle Children's Survivorship Programs, is happening on Saturday, October 3rd at the Sand Point Learning Center and registration is now OPEN!

This event will feature keynote speaker Brady Lucas; two time childhood cancer thriver, national keynote speaker, and the author of Smiley’s Smile, a children’s book created to empower young patients through their health experiences. His advocacy and storytelling have been featured by ABC News, PEOPLE, and The Seattle Times, and he has partnered with numerous nonprofits and children’s hospitals to elevate survivorship, hope, and spreading smiles through his motto 'Smiles Make the World Go Round'.

The event will also feature a survivor panel and breakout sessions on the topics of fertility, heart health, nutrition, self-advocacy, emotional impact, learning differences after treatment and connection through support groups.

This event is designed for pediatric, adolescent and young adults living with a cancer diagnosis. It is recommended for cancer survivors ages 12 and older and parents of cancer survivors of all ages. Caregivers, friends, families and health care professionals are also invited to attend.

In episode two of The After Cancer Podcast, oncology physical therapist Leslie Waltke unpacks what she calls the finish line myth: the assumption that when active treatment ends, cancer's impact ends with it. Drawing on patient stories from her three decades of practice, she explains why the shift into survivorship is one of the most disorienting stretches of the cancer experience, and one few people are warned about.

What It Matters: "Cancer treatment may end on a specific day," Waltke says, "but healing rarely does." She cites research showing that within five years of treatment, 15% of survivors report depression, 15% report anxiety, and 10% report thoughts of death, numbers that back up what Cancer Nation has argued for years: survivorship deserves the same structure and support as active treatment, starting with a real survivorship care plan for every survivor.
