Happy National Dog Day! 🐾
The horses may be the stars of the barn, but we all know the barn dogs have an important job too. From greeting us at the gate to keeping us company through long days, they are truly part of the team.

Gastric ulcers are common in horses and may show up as poor appetite, attitude changes, girth sensitivity, decreased performance, weight loss, or mild/recurrent colic.

How do we know?
Gastroscopy is the most accurate way to diagnose ulcers. A small camera allows your veterinarian to look inside the stomach and determine if ulcers are present and how severe they are.

Treatment: GastroGard® (omeprazole) is commonly used to treat gastric ulcers by reducing stomach acid and allowing the stomach lining to heal.
Prevention matters, too. Plenty of forage, minimizing long periods without food, reducing stress, turnout when possible, and thoughtful feeding and training routines can all help reduce ulcer risk. For horses at higher risk during travel, showing, or other stressful periods—your veterinarian may also recommend preventative omeprazole.

Take advantage of the GastroGard® offer before the end of the month!

Late summer can be one of the toughest times of year for horses dealing with itchy, irritated skin from insect bites and seasonal allergies. Constant rubbing and scratching can quickly lead to hair loss, sores, and discomfort.
EquiShield® IBH Spray is a staple at Gold Coast Equine during the warmer months. It’s easy to apply, safe for routine use as directed, and helps soothe irritated skin while providing relief from insect bite hypersensitivity.

Horses have a way of bringing generations together.
Jack is one of them. It's been a privilege to be part of his care and to see the special bond he shares with this family. Moments like these are a reminder of why we love what we do. 💙

💩 Did you know? A simple f***l sample can provide valuable insight into your horse's health.
F***l testing is commonly used to evaluate parasite burdens and help guide targeted deworming programs.
F***l samples can also be used to assess for sand accumulation and aid in the diagnosis of certain gastrointestinal conditions.
Have questions about f***l testing? The Gold Coast Equine team is happy to help.

No hoof, no horse.
The health of your horse’s feet affects far more than just the hoof itself. Proper hoof balance and routine farrier care are essential for supporting joints, tendons, ligaments, and overall soundness.
Common signs of hoof-related issues can include:
• Shortened stride or changes in movement
• Frequent stumbling
• Sensitivity on hard ground
• Cracks, abscesses, or changes in hoof shape
• Performance changes or intermittent lameness
Regular farrier visits and early evaluation of any changes can help prevent small problems from becoming larger ones. Collaboration between your veterinarian and farrier allows for a more complete understanding of your horse’s needs and can be especially valuable when managing lameness, conformational issues, or therapeutic shoeing cases.

One of the most valuable tools in a lameness evaluation is the diagnostic nerve block.
Using local anesthetics such as Carbocaine (mepivacaine), veterinarians can temporarily numb specific regions of the limb to help pinpoint the source of discomfort and better understand how a horse is moving.
Performance issues are not always obvious lameness. Sometimes they present as subtle changes — resistance, difficulty with collection, unevenness, or loss of performance. Diagnostic blocks help us gather important information so we can create a more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to each horse.
