No hoof, no horse.
The health of your horse’s feet affects far more than just the hoof itself. Proper hoof balance and routine farrier care are essential for supporting joints, tendons, ligaments, and overall soundness.
Common signs of hoof-related issues can include:
• Shortened stride or changes in movement
• Frequent stumbling
• Sensitivity on hard ground
• Cracks, abscesses, or changes in hoof shape
• Performance changes or intermittent lameness
Regular farrier visits and early evaluation of any changes can help prevent small problems from becoming larger ones. Collaboration between your veterinarian and farrier allows for a more complete understanding of your horse’s needs and can be especially valuable when managing lameness, conformational issues, or therapeutic shoeing cases.

One of the most valuable tools in a lameness evaluation is the diagnostic nerve block.
Using local anesthetics such as Carbocaine (mepivacaine), veterinarians can temporarily numb specific regions of the limb to help pinpoint the source of discomfort and better understand how a horse is moving.
Performance issues are not always obvious lameness. Sometimes they present as subtle changes — resistance, difficulty with collection, unevenness, or loss of performance. Diagnostic blocks help us gather important information so we can create a more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan tailored to each horse.

A sprung or twisted shoe can quickly turn into a much bigger problem if it’s left in place — from damage to the hoof wall to serious soft tissue injury. Knowing how to safely remove a loose or damaged shoe can help protect your horse while you wait for your farrier to arrive.

Join the ABR Farriery team at our Open House on May 30th for a practical demonstration on How to Safely Pull a Shoe. They’ll cover when a shoe should be removed, basic tools to keep on hand, and safe techniques every horse owner should know for handling common shoeing emergencies.

A simple skill that can make a big difference in preventing unnecessary injury!
