WORLD SIGHT DAY
What is your veterinarian looking for during an equine eye exam?
An eye exam can tell us much more than whether a horse can see clearly. Your veterinarian may evaluate the eyelids and surrounding tissues, pupil size and response to light, the cornea and lens, the structures at the back of the eye, and overall vision and reflexes. They’re looking for abnormalities such as corneal ulcers, inflammation/uveitis, cataracts, infection, trauma, or changes within the eye. This World Sight Day, we’re celebrating the importance of protecting those big, beautiful eyes.

What can radiographs tell us?
Digital radiographs are an important diagnostic tool in equine veterinary medicine, allowing our veterinarians to get a detailed look at the bones and joints that we can’t see from the outside.
Radiographs can help evaluate everything from lameness and joint changes to fractures, hoof balance, arthritis, and other bony abnormalities—giving us valuable information to help determine the next step in treatment or management.

Gastric ulcers are common in horses and may show up as poor appetite, attitude changes, girth sensitivity, decreased performance, weight loss, or mild/recurrent colic.

How do we know?
Gastroscopy is the most accurate way to diagnose ulcers. A small camera allows your veterinarian to look inside the stomach and determine if ulcers are present and how severe they are.

Treatment: GastroGard® (omeprazole) is commonly used to treat gastric ulcers by reducing stomach acid and allowing the stomach lining to heal.
Prevention matters, too. Plenty of forage, minimizing long periods without food, reducing stress, turnout when possible, and thoughtful feeding and training routines can all help reduce ulcer risk. For horses at higher risk during travel, showing, or other stressful periods—your veterinarian may also recommend preventative omeprazole.
