The Saddle Light Center For Therapeutic Horsemanship

The Saddle Light Center For Therapeutic Horsemanship The Saddle Light Center for Therapeutic Horsemanship is a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation located in Selma, TX at Retama Equestrian Center.

We help to build the self-esteem and quality of life for special needs individuals within Bexar County and surrounding areas through equine-assisted activities. As a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (P.A.T.H.) organization, we provide therapeutic horseback riding and hippotherapy to individuals with special needs within the San Antonio area with the goal of contributing positiv

ely to their cognitive, physical, emotional, and social well-being as to inspire them to accomplish things previously considered beyond their capabilities. Since our founding in 1991, through the generosity of our Sponsors and Volunteer workforce, we have grown from a few horses to a program that now provides equine therapy to 60 plus riders each week with a team of 13 horses. Through this program, the Saddle Light Center is committed to improving the self-esteem and quality of life of the disabled population in the San Antonio area. Our mission is to provide equestrian therapy for children, teenagers, and adults with neurological, orthopedic, learning, emotional or other disabilities. Our goal is to inspire our riders to accomplishments previously considered beyond their capabilities.

🐴☔ Silly Friday: The Last Day of Break!

Today is the final day of our End-of-School Break, and it seems Nike and Max have very different priorities.
Nike is busy thinking about summer session starting Monday...

Meanwhile, Max—our resident mud-loving pony—is celebrating the rainy weather the best way he knows how: by dreaming about mud. 🤎😂

We're excited to welcome our riders, families, volunteers, and horses back for our Summer Session beginning Monday, June 8!

Until then, we'll let Max enjoy one last vacation day... and hopefully not too much mud. 🌧️🐴

What caption would you give Nike and Max? Let us know below! ⬇️

🐴 Behind the Scenes: Coco's Journey to Becoming Therapy-Ready 💙

While sessions are on break, the learning doesn't stop!

This week, Kerstin has been working with Coco on one of the most important skills our therapy horses learn — trust.

Through gradual exposure to different objects, textures, and equipment, Coco is learning to stay calm and accept the many tools that may be used during therapy sessions both on and around the horse.

From foam rings to colorful blocks and everything in between, these exercises help prepare our horses for the unique experiences they may encounter while helping riders/clients.

A great therapy horse isn't just trained — they're patient, adaptable, and willing to trust their handlers every step of the way. Coco is doing a wonderful job! 🐴✨

🐾 Barney & Betty Alert! 🐾

If you’re not lounging around like this… you’re probably doing too much. 😹

Today’s lesson from your barn supervisors:

☀️ Find a comfy spot
😴 Stretch out dramatically
🐾 Perfect the art of doing absolutely nothing

Barney and Betty are reminding us all that sometimes the most productive thing you can do is take a well-earned cat nap.

Oh, and say hello to Kerstin… she decided to stop and take a photo with us.
(We’ll allow it this time. 😼)

Looks like we’ve officially mastered the “barn break” life.

🐴✨ Thank You for Following Along with Meet the Herd Monday!✨🐴

Thank you for joining us as we introduced the incredible horses of The Saddle Light Center through our Meet the Herd Monday series.

Last week, we wrapped up our active therapy herd introductions with Copper, our gentle giant.

But we’re not quite finished yet…

🐴 Follow along the next two Mondays for our special Retirement Edition as we introduce the final two horses in our series — Schooner and Max.

Though these special boys are now retired from carrying riders, they are still deeply loved members of our herd. We’re honored to care for them in retirement, making sure they enjoy the comfort, attention, and love they so greatly deserve after years of helping our riders.

Even without riders on their backs, they still play an important role in our stables — bringing comfort, companionship, and plenty of personality to barn life each day. 💙

Join us over the next two Mondays as we celebrate their stories and the lasting impact they’ve made at The Saddle Light Center.

🐴😂 Silly Friday with Beau!

With end of school break here, Beau seems to have some thoughts about having a little extra time off… 😎

What do YOU think Beau is thinking?

🅰️ School’s out… which means my schedule is now fully booked with absolutely nothing.

🅱️ No lessons today? I guess I’ll just stand here and pretend I wasn’t already planning that.

🅲 Break time checklist:
✔ Sleep in
✔ Look majestic
✔ Judge everyone walking by

Drop your vote in the comments: A, B, or C!

We have a feeling Beau is definitely leaning toward one of these… but we want to hear what you think! 👇🐴

Create one of your own if you like.

🐴 Meet the Herd Monday: Copper

Copper (registered name Sonny’s Halo) joined The Saddle Light Center herd in 2024.

Born in 2002, this 17-hand Thoroughbred gelding comes from racing royalty — his father won the 1983 Kentucky Derby. While Copper only raced once himself, he found his true calling as a calm, patient, and talented equestrian horse.

Before joining SLC, Copper trained in jumping, dressage, eventing, and Parelli Natural Horsemanship.

Known around the barn as one of our “gentle giants,” Copper has become a favorite during volunteer orientations and trainings. Anna, one of his human best friends and exercise partners, often uses Copper to help introduce new volunteers to the horses because of his accepting, curious, patient, and gentle nature. Even with people who are still learning and building confidence around horses, Copper is always happy to walk up, say hello, and help create a welcoming environment. 🐴💛

With his calm personality, strong build, and friendly attitude, Copper is a wonderful partner for many of our larger riders — and a true ambassador for our program.

✨ Follow along each Monday to meet the horses who make the magic happen at The Saddle Light Center.
