We had a little fun celebrating National Boss’s Day this week with a taco bar, piñata, flowers and plenty of laughs!

The truth is, we love any excuse to celebrate and have a good time around here... but this time we had two especially good reasons, Dr. Michael Cahn and Mrs. Briana Cahn!

These two are appreciated every day for making this such a wonderful place to work. They take great care of our team, and we think that makes a big difference in how our team takes care of our patients.

Those twisted, bulging veins on your legs aren't just cosmetic.

When a vein starts to twist or bulge through the skin, it usually means the valves inside aren't closing properly anymore. Blood that should be moving back up toward the heart is pooling instead, and the vein stretches under the pressure. That's what gives a varicose vein its shape, not just how it looks, but what's actually happening underneath.

Discoloration is often part of the same picture. Skin near the ankle that looks darker or faintly bruised, without any injury to explain it, is another sign that blood has been pooling in that spot for a while.

It's easy to assume this is only about appearance, especially if nothing hurts yet. But a vein that's visibly twisted, bulging, or discolored is already a vein that isn't doing its job the way it should, and that tends to change slowly, over months and years, not overnight.

Achy, heavy legs can mean more than a long day, a free vein health screening shows what's underneath, with no referral needed.

A Free Vein Health Screening at our office starts with an ultrasound, the same imaging we use to see how blood is actually moving through the veins in your legs, not just what they look like on the surface. It's how we tell the difference between a vein that's simply visible and one that's starting to malfunction, and it's the clearest way to know if you're a candidate for treatment.

You don't need a referral to come in. If your legs ache by the end of the day, swell more than they used to, or you've noticed a vein bulging or a patch of darker skin near your ankle, that's reason enough to get checked. Most people wait years, assuming it's just part of getting older or figuring it's too minor to mention. A screening settles that question in one visit, with no commitment attached.

What you see on the surface doesn’t always tell the whole story.

The picture in your head is vein stripping and weeks of recovery. None of that is what happens in our office today.

A lot of patients wait years before doing anything about aching, bulging veins because the only version of "vein surgery" they've ever heard of is the old one: an operating room, general anesthesia, a long stretch on the couch. That fear alone keeps people from even getting checked, while their legs keep telling them something every day.

Varicose vein treatment has changed. Dr. Cahn's procedures are minimally invasive and done right here in the office, with local anesthesia instead of a hospital operating room. Most patients are back to normal activity within a day or two, not weeks. And because varicose veins are usually a circulation issue and not just a cosmetic one, treatment is often covered by insurance.

If the word "surgery" is the only thing that's kept you from looking into this, it might be worth finding out what your legs actually qualify for before writing it off. The first conversation doesn't commit you to anything.

Aching, heavy legs by dinnertime isn't just a sign you had a long day.

It's one of the most common things we hear from patients before they even think to mention their veins. The ache creeps in by mid-afternoon, your ankles feel a little tighter by evening, or you've started propping your feet up out of habit rather than comfort. Most people chalk it up to a long shift, the wrong shoes, or just getting older.

But heaviness, swelling, and aching are often some of the earliest signs that a vein isn't working the way it should. When the valves inside a vein weaken, blood can pool instead of moving back up toward the heart the way it's supposed to. That pooling is what you're feeling at the end of the day, well before a vein ever becomes visibly bulging or discolored.

The good news is these early signs are also the easiest to act on. Looking at how your veins actually function, not just how they look, is the clearest way to know what's going on.
