❄️ Is It Time to Rethink the R.I.C.E. Protocol? ❄️
For decades, injuries were treated with R.I.C.E.—Rest, Ice, Compression, and Elevation. While ice can temporarily reduce pain and provide comfort, many clinicians and sports medicine professionals are now questioning whether aggressively suppressing swelling is always the best approach.
Why?
Because inflammation and swelling are not simply problems to eliminate. They are part of the body’s highly coordinated healing response. Blood delivers repair materials to injured tissues, while the lymphatic system removes excess fluid, damaged cells, inflammatory byproducts, and cellular debris.
Healing isn’t just about reducing swelling.
It’s about managing it effectively.
When the lymphatic system is functioning well, the body can clear congestion more efficiently and create an environment where healthy tissue repair can occur. When fluid movement becomes sluggish, recovery may be prolonged and tissues can remain irritated longer than necessary.
This is where Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) can play an important role. Rather than simply trying to stop the healing response, MLD works with the body’s natural physiology, helping support fluid movement and the removal of waste products generated during tissue repair.
At Capstone Method, we believe complete injury recovery requires both healthy biomechanics and healthy lymphatic drainage. Good movement helps fluid move. Good fluid movement helps tissue heal.
The goal isn’t to fight the healing process.
