Dr. Jennifer Taylor Menda

Dr. Jennifer Taylor Menda I’m a Five Element acupuncturist working at the intersection of gut healing, emotional regulation, and seasonal alignment.

My work reconnects women to their natural rhythms and restores the deep physiological reset Western medicine doesn’t teach.

Your 3am wake-up has two parts, and most doctors won't name either.

Part one is physical. Cortisol, the hormone that wakes you, starts climbing in the second half of the night and peaks close to 4am. At 35 you slept straight through that climb. Now your progesterone is dropping, the hormone that keeps you calm and holds you in sleep, so the same rise is enough to pull you awake. Most doctors call that aging and send you home.

Part two, conventional medicine has no framework for.

In Chinese medicine, the Liver governs your emotions, and the hours between 1 and 3am belong to the Liver. Carry enough frustration and grief you were never given room to put down, and the Liver gets congested. It wakes you in its own window, night after night.

One wake-up. Two stories. You deserve both.

Save this, and follow for more ways to help your perimenopausal body rest thru the night.

The last Qigong video for Summer Ignited is complete, and I am out here at the beach soaking up exactly what we are walking into on Thursday.

If you have been stuck since winter, this is your season. Summer is Fire. Laughter, joy, the willingness to be seen again. Your Heart wants to open. Your blood wants to circulate. Your spirit wants to come out of hiding.

And because my science brain will not let me skip this part: yang without yin burns you out. Fire without water turns into anxiety, insomnia, and that wired-tired feeling so many of us know too well. So inside Summer Ignited, we honor the heat and keep you strong, hydrated, and rooted while you rise.

You do not have to choose between resting and rising. You can do both.

Doors open Thursday. Comment FIRE and I will send you the link.

You can take all the sleep supplements you want.

If your body still has work to do at night, it will wake you up to do it.

2 to 4 AM waking is one of the clearest patterns I see.

It usually means your system is overloaded and has nowhere to put what you are carrying.

So it handles it when everything gets quiet.

You do not need more sleep aids.

You need more space during the day to move what is stuck.

Send me a DM and I will share my Chinese medicine tips for getting to bed and staying asleep.

Insomnia is not always a sleep problem.

It is often a nervous system problem.

I see women exhausted, doing all the “right” things… magnesium, teas, routines… and still wide awake at night.

Because the body will not shut down if it does not feel safe.

You cannot force sleep onto a system that is still on alert.

In Chinese medicine, when the Heart cannot settle the mind, sleep becomes light, broken, or nonexistent.

So the question is not just how do I sleep.

It is why does my body not feel safe enough to rest. Let your brilliant body tell you.

The version of you who sleeps through the night, feels even in your nervous system, and recognizes herself in the mirror...

The version of you who sleeps through the night, feels even in your nervous system, and recognizes herself in the mirror again is not that far away.

She’s just a few seasons right ahead of you.

Constipation is not just about what you ate.

It is about what is not moving.

I see this all the time in clinic. Women doing “everything right” with fiber, water, supplements… and still stuck.

Because the body does not separate digestion from stress.
Or emotions.
Or how you are living day to day.

If your nervous system is tight, your gut will be tight.
If you are holding things in emotionally, your body often follows.

Flow is not a trend. It is physiology.

So the real question is not just what are you eating.
It is where in your life are you not allowing movement.

A few weeks ago, I recorded this video for my Anatomy & Physiology students introducing homeostasis — and the difference between positive and negative feedback loops.

Teaching it again reminded me of something I see every single day in clinic:

👉🏽 The body is not stupid.
👉🏽 It is constantly sensing, adjusting, correcting, and communicating.
👉🏽 Healing isn’t something that gets added — it’s something that gets restored.

Negative feedback loops are how the body keeps itself alive.
Temperature regulation. Blood sugar balance. Hormones finding equilibrium again after stress.

But when we outsource healing to systems that override, suppress, or hijack these signals instead of listening to them…
we interrupt the very intelligence that knows how to come back into balance.

That doesn’t mean medicine is the enemy.
It means intervention without respect for physiology has consequences.

The goal isn’t to silence symptoms.
The goal is to help the body remember how to regulate itself again.

Your body already speaks the language of healing.
The question is whether the system you’re using knows how to listen.

10 everyday things my kids do — not because I’m strict, but because I practice Chinese medicine 🌱
(acupuncturist + mom of two)

This isn’t a parenting rulebook or a judgment post. If you do none of these and your kids are thriving — truly, amazing. These are just the small, repeatable supports that work for our family.

1️⃣ Warm water only, yep, year-round cause it supports Spleen & Stomach digestion
2️⃣ Stainless steel bottles- they protect Kidney essence (growth + hormones) ❌ hormone disrupting
3️⃣ Socks at night — warms Kidney, Liver & Spleen channels → better sleep
4️⃣ Slippers indoors (same reason)
5️⃣ Scarves in wind/cold — prevents Wind from entering channels that leads to colds and flu
6️⃣ Herbs at first signs — supports Wei Qi (playing defense) early
7️⃣ One sweet day/week — nourishes Spleen without overload; they look forward to that day and keeps us all happy
8️⃣ Skip sweets when unwell — supports healing. Sugar keeps us down
9️⃣ Herbal liniment for bumps and bruises (not ice) — moves Blood + Qi for healing. ❤️ (stop by my clinic to get your bottle
🔟 Something green every meal — supports Liver flow & blood (post on this part soon)

None of this is about doing it “right.”
It’s about working with the body.
