“Jack Didn't Wait for Fitness to Become Popular. He Made It Popular.”

Today, fitness is everywhere.

Health clubs are in nearly every community. Personal trainers help millions of people. Strength training is recommended for men and women of virtually every age. Exercise programs fill television screens, social media feeds, apps and streaming platforms.

But there was a time when none of that was normal.

And Jack LaLanne was there helping change it.

When Jack opened his first health studio in Oakland, California, in 1936, organized fitness as we know it today barely existed. Weight training was often misunderstood. Many people believed lifting weights would make athletes slow or “muscle-bound.” Women were frequently discouraged from strength training altogether.

Jack challenged those ideas.

He didn't just tell people exercise was important.

He showed them.

He opened health clubs.

He developed exercise equipment.

He encouraged women to become stronger.

He promoted resistance training long before it became mainstream.

He talked about nutrition and personal responsibility for health decades before “wellness” became an industry.

And then he did something that would introduce fitness to an entirely new audience.

He went on television.

That idea seems ordinary today.

At the time, it was revolutionary.

Jack wasn't following a fitness trend.

Jack was helping create the trend.

And perhaps his greatest contribution wasn't an exercise machine, a television program, a health club or even one of his legendary physical feats.

It was changing people's expectations of themselves.

Jack convinced generations of Americans that they could become stronger.

That women should exercise.

That older people should exercise.

That strength wasn't reserved for athletes.

Nearly everything Jack advocated eventually became mainstream.

That's what pioneers do.

They see possibilities before everyone else sees them.

Dolly Parton once said she patterned her look after the “town tramp” she admired as a child: a woman with piled-up blonde hair, tight skirts, high heels, and bright red lipstick.

Dolly didn’t yet understand the insult behind the word “trash.” She only saw glamour. She saw a woman who shined, who was bold, who looked like she belonged in a world larger than the small Tennessee town around them.

Years later, Dolly turned that childhood memory into one of the most iconic looks in American culture—and into a life lesson.

“It costs a lot of money to look this cheap,” she famously joked. But behind the sequins, rhinestones, wigs, and red lipstick was a woman of extraordinary substance: a songwriter, businesswoman, philanthropist, advocate for children’s literacy, and someone who repeatedly used her success to lift up others.

Dolly showed the world that “respectability” is not determined by your clothes, your accent, your bank account, your ZIP code, or the labels people try to place on you.

It is measured by your character. By generosity. By how you treat people. By whether you use what you have to make someone else’s life better.

Sequins and red lipstick on the outside. Pure gold on the inside.

That’s Dolly Parton’s legacy.

Yesterday’s Women, Coffee & Community gathering in Grants Pass was such a wonderful morning! Twelve women came together for coffee, conversation, laughter, and a walk through the park.

We shared stories, discovered new connections, and had such a good time that I completely forgot to take pictures! Apparently, I was too busy enjoying the moment. ☕️😊

Thank you to every woman who joined us! I’ll definitely be doing this again in Grants Pass, and I’m looking forward to bringing Women, Coffee & Community to Sherwood too!

Any dog lovers out there? My new friend, has a need with her cute pup. As you know, veterinarian bills can be very very expensive! Sometimes they can be too expensive! I’m just passing this along if anyone feels the need and desire to help out. 🩷
