Ever wonder what is part of herbalism in Traditional Chinese Medicine?

Traditional Herbal Medicine utilizes ingredients from the animal, plant and mineral kingdoms to treat many different health conditions.

All ingredients are collectively referred to as “herbs”.

Each herb offers a variety of chemical constituents that have specific biological functions.

Different parts of the plant (i.e. roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruit, seed and bark) can often perform different functions.

When multiple ingredients are combined to make a formula, the sum of the chemical constituents is often more powerful and efficacious than the individual parts.

Our acupuncturist, Quan Zhou is a trained herbalist that uses a wide array of plant medicine to help restore balance with her patients. Want to learn more? Call us for your session today at 978-906-0060.

Osteoporosis + glyphosate

Bone health is about more than calcium.

A January 2026 paper examined glyphosate exposure in relation to bone mineral density, osteoporosis, and fracture outcomes in the U.S. population.

We need more research, but it raises an important clinical point: bone health is shaped by the whole environment. Nutrient intake matters, but so do toxicant exposure, inflammation, gut health, hormones, movement, and muscle mass. Strong bones require a whole-body strategy.
Toxicant exposure like glyphosate in our food can be hard to understand. At the clinic, we can test toxicant exposure to better direct your interventions and plan for longterm bone health.

Reach out to us if you want to know more about your risks for osteoporosis and our recommendations for prevention.

Vagus nerve and stress physiology

What if calming the body starts with the vagus nerve?

New research in 2026 is exploring the vagus nerve–adrenal anti-inflammatory axis and how neuromodulation may influence stress and inflammation physiology.

This is part of a larger shift in medicine: stress is not just emotional. It becomes biological when it changes nervous system tone, immune signaling, digestion, sleep, and recovery.

Supporting vagal tone may include breathwork, sleep restoration, nervous system regulation, gentle movement, trauma-informed care, and selected therapeutic tools. At the clinic, we have been measuring the effects of devices such as the Nuropod and Neural Therapy.

Tell us ways you support vagal tone naturally, we would love to learn from you!

Product highlight — Avmacol

Why do we use Avmacol in some detoxification protocols?

Avmacol is a broccoli-based supplement designed to support sulforaphane production by pairing glucoraphanin with active myrosinase. Sulforaphane has been studied for its role in antioxidant signaling, detoxification pathways, and cellular protection.

We do not believe in one-size-fits-all supplementation, but for the right patient, targeted support for detoxification and oxidative stress may be very helpful.

As always, detox support should be individualized and built on nutrition, bowel regularity, hydration, liver support, and clinical context.

Ask us whether sulforaphane support is appropriate for your care plan.

Resistance training does more than build muscle. It may help build a better brain.

Research suggests resistance training can increase BDNF, or brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a key molecule involved in neuroplasticity, learning, and resilience.
This is one reason strength training matters far beyond aesthetics. Muscle is a metabolic organ. Exercise also shapes signaling in the brain and throughout the body.

Some researchers are now asking whether exercise-related pathways, including BDNF and inflammatory modulation, may play a role in cancer biology as well. That question is still evolving, but it is an exciting area to watch.

Need help starting a safe resistance program? We can help you build one.

Longevity Hacks

There may not be enough methylene blue or rapamycin to do what consistent lifestyle change can do.

The longevity field is full of excitement around compounds, peptides, and pharmaceuticals. But the basics still matter most: muscle mass, blood sugar regulation, sleep quality, recovery, circadian rhythm, stress load, and nutrient density.

Emerging therapies may have a place. But they do not replace the physiology shaped by daily habits.

The future of longevity will likely include both innovation and discipline. We believe the foundation still starts with how you live.

Comment “LONGEVITY” if you want us to share our top 5 non-negotiable lifestyle foundations.

Glycine may be small, but its role in metabolic health is not.

Glycine is an amino acid involved in glutathione production, detoxification pathways, and cellular metabolism. Research continues to show that lower glycine levels are linked with insulin resistance, obesity, and metabolic dysfunction. One study indicated 15g dose daily helped with insulin resistance.

While glycine is not a magic fix, it is a fascinating example of how nutrient status and amino acid balance may shape metabolic resilience.

This is why we look beyond calories alone and ask deeper questions about mitochondrial health, oxidative stress, and nutrient sufficiency.

What if the most powerful diabetes prevention tool is not a prescription?

A landmark study published in NEJM in 2002 showed that lifestyle intervention outperformed metformin for reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes in high-risk adults. Even more impressive, long-term follow-up published in 2025 showed those benefits continued over 21 years.

This is not anti-medication. It is a reminder that food choices, movement, body composition, sleep, and consistent daily habits can change physiology in profound ways.

At Katallage Wellness, we believe lifestyle is not “extra.” It is foundational medicine.
Send us a message if you want support building a realistic metabolic health plan.
