Same goes for soy too! Phytoestrogens, found in flax and soy, can be so misunderstood.

Flax modulates estrogen in the body. The lignans in flax preferentially bind to the protective Beta estrogen receptor, which is why research shows they are not just safe, but protective.

In fact, flaxseeds have been shown to enhance the tumor-inhibiting effects of tamoxifen on estrogen-dependent breast cancer.

And not to mention the fiber and omega-3 fatty acids in flax! That’s what makes them not only a hormone super food but also good for your cholesterol, blood sugar, and brain.

Aim for 1-2 TBSP ground flaxseeds daily.

After 15 years of working with patients who want to lose weight, here’s what works:

1. Abundance > Scarcity. Let go of scarcity [what do I have to cut out?] and choose abundance [what can I INCLUDE to fuel my body?]. You can be mindful without being obsessive.

2. Fast Forgiveness. What makes people successful isn’t whether they get off track. You will. You’re human. What makes them successful is how fast they get back on track. Be kind to yourself, check guilt at the door. Progress not perfection!

3. Uncover your WHY. Comprehensive metabolic bloodwork can help - hormones, cortisol, thyroid, blood sugar, and insulin.

4. Cook 90% of your meals at home - but keep it SIMPLE. It doesn’t have to be extravagant. Have a similar meal schedule each week.

5. Balance blood sugar and lower insulin spikes with protein- and fiber-forward nutrition. When glucose increases, so does insulin. Insulin is a fat storage hormone. Protein and fiber slow the rise and keep you full longer.

6. Strength training and walking after meals. Non-negotiables for a healthy metabolism.

7. What about GLP-1s? If appropriate, they can be a powerful metabolic tool. But it’s crucial to combine them with lifestyle modifications.

You don’t have to cut out foods you love to lose weight and support blood sugar. You can be healthy and still fully live your life!

Quick positive from the same study: they tested 20 olive oil-labeled products, and 90% of olive oil chips passed and 100% of dressings + mayos passed. So if you DO want to make a swap for chips or mayo, olive oil is the one that actually tested authentic.

Frustrating about the avocado oil part? Yes. We should get what we pay for and have standards for avocado oil purity.

But when it comes to our health, this is where we miss the forest for the trees.

Calling seed oils “toxic” and the cause of metabolic disease and widespread inflammation is misinformed, promoting orthorexia, and is culturally insensitive. The real issue isn’t the oil - it’s that calorie-dense, nutrient-poor foods like chips, pastries, and fried foods are ultra-processed, hyperpalatable, and high in sugar + refined carbs and low in fiber + micronutrients. While these foods commonly contain seed oils, it doesn’t mean the oil is the problem.

Yes, seed oils are high in omega-6s, which can promote inflammation when we don’t get enough omega-3s to balance them out. The Standard American Diet is about 14:1 omega-6 to omega-3, we want closer to 4:1. So if you get enough omega-3s in your diet (salmon, walnuts, flax, chia, fish oil), no need to sweat the occasional seed oils.

At the end of the day, a chip is a chip - regardless of the oil. The bigger picture matters so much more: How often are you eating processed foods? Are you getting enough fiber-rich plant foods? Are you drinking enough water? Are you moving your body daily? Are you getting enough sleep? These things matter 100x more than if there’s canola oil in your salad dressing 🫶

Low ferritin is not just a number on a lab test. It’s a signal.

If your ferritin is low, the question isn’t just “how do I get more iron in?”
It’s “WHY are my stores low in the first place?”

Here are 3 common reasons I see:
1. Poor Iron Absorption 💩
You can be eating enough iron, but not absorbing it. This is often a gut story - low stomach acid, low digestive enzymes, celiac, Inflammatory bowel disease, gut microbiome imbalance, or chronic infection.

2. Blood Loss 🩸
One of the most common reasons, especially for women. Think heavy periods, postpartum blood loss, or even small, consistent losses from the GI tract like ulcers or polyps that add up over time.

3. Inadequate Intake 🥬
Not enough iron-rich foods coming in. This can happen with plant-predominant diets or chronic low-calorie intake. Plant-based iron is harder to absorb than heme iron from meat.

Ferritin has to be looked at in the context of the whole body - intake, absorption, loss, gut health, and hormones.

Low ferritin might be one of the most overlooked reasons for why people feel like 💩

When my labs came back with low ferritin, I did what I tell my patients to do: I built my meals around bioavailable iron and took a quality iron supplement.

I LOVE plants and eat a plant-predominant diet — lots of veggies, berries, whole grains, legumes and fish & poultry. I’ve never been too keen on red meat, but my body was crying out for some heme iron (found in animal protein).

Plants have iron and you better believe I will continue to eat lots of them... but I’m now focused on optimal food pairings and a bit more red meat.

➡️ Comment IRON and I’ll send you my favorite tips, tricks & goodies for boosting ferritin.
