Louisiana Association for the Blind

Louisiana Association for the Blind A shining light in NWLA for people with visual impairment - providing training, services & employment Excellence in all that we do is our goal.

Established in 1927, Louisiana Association for the Blind (LAB) is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) organization providing stable employment, vocational training and rehabilitative services to individuals who are blind and visually impaired in Louisiana. LAB's core values of respect for individual abilities, honesty, and integrity create an environment that encourages personal growth and independence

. At LAB our focus is on a person's capabilities not disabilities. Quality is the end result: in products, in training, and in employment opportunities. LAB employs people who are blind in manufacturing, administrative, training and a variety of job positions that match an individual's goals and potential. The Javits-Wagner-O'Day Act (JWOD) allows LAB and other agencies employing the blind to secure contracts to provide products and services to the Federal government. The JWOD program helps to ensure steady, long-term employment for people who are blind. LAB is a member of the National Association for Employment of People Who are Blind (NAEPB) and affiliated with National Industries for the Blind (NIB). Additionally, LAB is licensed by the Department of Social Services and recognized by Louisiana Rehabilitation Services as a rehabilitative facility. For more information about LAB, please call 1-877-913-6471.

🎣 Happy National Fishing Day! 🎣

It's also Tech Tuesday (on a Thursday!)

Fishing is more than just a hobby—it's an opportunity to connect with nature, spend time with loved ones, and create lasting memories.

Today, we're highlighting adaptive fishing technology that helps make the sport more accessible for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Tools like the Zebco Bite Alert Fishing Pole use audible alerts to help anglers know when they have a bite, making fishing more independent and enjoyable for everyone.

Because accessibility belongs everywhere—even out on the water 💙

Happy National Mascot Day!

Every great organization needs a mascot... and it got us thinking

If Louisiana Association for the Blind had an official mascot, what should it be? A guide dog? An owl? A cane with a personality? Something completely unexpected?

Drop your ideas in the comments below! We can't wait to see what our community comes up with.

Happy Birthday, U.S. Army!

Today, we celebrate the strength, dedication, and service of the United States Army and the brave men and women who have served our nation for 250 years.

At Louisiana Association for the Blind, we are proud to support our military through our Base Supply Center at Fort Polk, where our team helps provide essential products and services to military personnel and operations. Through partnerships like these, we continue creating meaningful employment opportunities while supporting those who serve.

Thank you to all Soldiers—past and present—for your commitment, sacrifice, and service. We salute you today and every day. 🇺🇸

Week 2 of our ILS Youth Camp is wrapping up!

This week our campers went to the beautiful YMCA of Northwest Louisiana's LASH Family YMCA where they learned about water safety and enjoyed swimming.

We met friends of the deep blue sea at the Shreveport Aquarium, and made delicious pizzas using supplies from our friends at Brookshire's.

Campers continued to learn and apply kitchen safety skills, and met with our workforce development team to learn about interviewing for scholarships, internships, and jobs.

Again, thank you to Willis Knighton Health for making this years camp possible!

Happy National Movie Night!

Movie nights are all about enjoying your favorite films, sharing laughs, and making memories—but for individuals with low vision, accessing what's on the screen can sometimes be a challenge.

That's where assistive technology like a Splay Display Screen can help. By enlarging and enhancing content from a smartphone or device, it can make movies, videos, and other visual media easier to view and enjoy.

Because everyone deserves a front-row seat to the entertainment they love!

L.A.B.’s third annual Independent Living Skills (ILS) summer youth program for low vision and blind high school students is off to a great start! The first week was filled with a variety of cooking and art activities, plus a bowling challenge at Holiday Lanes. Campers discussed the importance of self-advocacy, learned cooking skills and kitchen safety, and used a variety of assistive technology apps to assist them in kitchen.

A big thank you to Willis Knighton Health for making this years camp possible!
