Day 8: Developmental Readiness

🚽 Toilet Readiness Topic of the Day: Developmental Readiness!

A child’s developing ability to recognize bodily cues, communicate needs, and gain increasing independence in toileting skills are integral in supporting a smoother transition into toilet training.

🤓 Toileting developmental skills, according to Kids Bowel and Bladder, are seen in the second picture.

Starting toilet training too soon could lead to further delays in toilet training, so listening to your child’s cues as well as creating a comforting and positive environment can help support you and your child through this process.

Remember: every child develops at their own pace, and readiness is about a combination of physical, cognitive, and emotional skills—not just age.

🌱 Which best describes your child right now?

🍼 Still not showing clear bladder/bowel awareness
👀 Starting to notice and react to wet/soiled diapers
🚽 Showing early toileting interest and cues
🌟 Demonstrating multiple readiness skills already

Day 7: Constipation

🚽 Toilet Readiness Topic of the Day: Constipation!

When a child experiences constipation, it can affect more than just their digestion—it can also influence their confidence with toileting.

🤓 According to Kids Bowel and Bladder, constipation:
✅ Is common during toilet training
✅ May indicate withholding behaviors as the pelvic floor muscles are used voluntarily for the first time

A large portion of children who struggle with urine incontinence also struggle with constipation. When the bowels are full, the urine has no where else to go but out, after only filling up so little. Tracking bowel movements and addressing constipation before toilet training can improve the child’s overall success with the potty.

Remember: every child develops at their own pace, and readiness is about a combination of physical, cognitive, and emotional skills—not just age.

🚽 True or False?

Day 6: Preparation

🚽 Toilet Readiness Topic of the Day: Preparation!

A little preparation before toilet training begins can go a long way in building confidence for both children and caregivers.

🤓 According to Kids Bowel and Bladder, some things to consider with preparations include:
✅ Having a child-sized toilet seat and stool for stability
✅ Identify what motivates your child, may that be stickers, verbal praise, or even small rewards
✅ Expect leakage/“accidents”, as this is part of the learning process

Preparation takes some of the stress out of this process. Ensuring that your child has a safe, fun, and supportive toilet seat with the appropriate height stool (places hips and knees bent more than 90 degrees) makes your child ready to take on voiding both urine and bowel movements into the toilet with no strain on the pelvic floor.

Remember: every child develops at their own pace, and readiness is about a combination of physical, cognitive, and emotional skills—not just age.

💬 Fill in the blank:
“Before we start toilet training, I want my child to be able to ________.”

Day 5: Timing

🚽 Toilet Readiness Topic of the Day: Timing!

Even when a child shows signs of readiness, choosing the right time to begin can help make toilet training a smoother and more positive experience.

🤓 According to Kids Bowel and Bladder, some things to consider with timing include:
✅ Avoid starting during major life changes, such as changing schools, addition of a new sibling, moving homes, etc.
✅ Caregivers must be ready to commit to consistency

Timing of beginning toilet training is everything. While the child may demonstrate signs of being ready for toileting, there might be some extraneous factors that bring stress and anxiety into the child’s mind, which will make toilet training more difficult.

Remember: every child develops at their own pace, and readiness is about a combination of physical, cognitive, and emotional skills—not just age.

Day 3: Cognitive Readiness (wouldn’t be me if I didn’t accidentally miss a day 🤪)

🚽 Toilet Readiness Topic of the Day: Cognitive Readiness!

✅ Shows and expresses curiosity about the toilet
✅ Recognizes urge to go and understands what it means

Day 2: Gross Motor Skills 💪🏻

🚽 Toilet Readiness Topic of the Day: Gross Motor Skills!

A child’s gross motor skills play an important role in toileting readiness. We’re looking at how they move, balance, stabilize their body, and use diaphragmatic (belly) breathing.

🤓 According to Kids Bowel and Bladder, signs of readiness may include:
✅ Pulling pants up and down with some assistance
✅ Getting on and off the toilet independently or with support, depending on their abilities
✅ Having enough core strength to sit upright and stable on the toilet
✅ Being able to use diaphragmatic (belly) breathing while sitting

🥳 If your child is beginning to show these skills, they may be demonstrating signs of toileting readiness!

Remember: every child develops at their own pace, and readiness is about a combination of physical, cognitive, and emotional skills—not just age.

Day 1: Physiological Readiness 👤

Today, we are talking about the physiological readiness that kids exhibit whenever they are beginning to explore toilet training! 🚽

🤓 This looks like:
- Bladder can hold for about 2 hours, especially with the child waking up from naps dry.
- Larger, more substantial urination occurs at one time rather than smaller spurts throughout the day.
- Bowel movements are regular without straining.

These are some great signs to look for whenever beginning to consider toilet training with your kiddo! 🤩
