✨🌎 Meet Dr. Laura Handal Abularach! 🏆 Recipient of the Nyapati Rao & Francis Lu International Medical Graduate Fellowship. Dr. Handal’s journey reflects adaptability, perseverance, and a commitment to growth. From Bolivia, Argentina, Dr. Handal’s journey is a beautiful story of resilience, culture, and heart! 💛

When you first meet Dr. Handal, you know immediately from her kindness and connection that her roots grounded her in the warmth and community, and that’s what she brings to her patients and our department every day! She brings a deeply human, patient-centered approach to psychiatry — where every story matters, and no one’s experience exists in isolation.

🤔 What inspired Dr. Handal’s path early in her career?
During her pediatrics training, she noticed something powerful: many of her young patients carried invisible burdens — trauma, stress, and loss. That realization sparked her passion for psychiatry and understanding the emotional worlds behind physical health.

Today, Dr. Handal continues to bridge these worlds — combining pediatric and psychiatric care while advocating for culturally informed, compassionate medicine.

“My heritage shapes how I listen, how I understand family, and how I think about resilience.”
At LSU Health Shreveport, with the guidance of inspiring mentors like Dr. Pam McPherson, she’s not only building her career — she’s building community, connection, and belonging.

🌱 Her advice to others?
Honor your story. Embrace the discomfort of growth. And always build community.

✨ We are so proud to celebrate Dr. Handal who leads with compassion, culture, and purpose! ✨

Today’s Grand Rounds was an inspiring and deeply impactful conversation on neurodivergence-informed care in acute care settings.

A sincere thank you to Dr. Georgina Hartzell and Dr. Sean Kerrigan for sharing your expertise, insights, and passion for creating more inclusive, patient-centered healthcare environments. Your presentation highlighted the importance of recognizing and supporting the unique needs of neurodivergent individuals while delivering compassionate, effective care in acute settings.

What made this presentation especially meaningful was how relatable it was for trainees. Through your thoughtful discussion and real-world experiences, many of us could see reflections of our own clinical encounters, challenges, and opportunities for growth. The practical strategies and perspectives you shared resonated deeply, making the content not only educational but immediately applicable to our daily practice.

Thank you for advancing this important conversation, fostering greater understanding, and equipping us to provide more equitable and responsive care. Your leadership and advocacy are helping to shape a healthcare system where every patient feels seen, understood, and supported.

Today’s Psychiatry Grand Rounds recap… with a twist!🌪️

Why the twist? Because moments like today are a beautiful reminder of just how much passion lives in our department and its many connections across the miles. Every day, every moment is a “beat” that builds a culture of excellence.

Take Dr. Maitreyee Berends, Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Fellow, for example, whose plan began nearly a year ago at AACAP where she invited today’s incredible guest speakers. After months of thoughtful CME planning alongside Elka Anderson, it came to fruition in a powerful presentation titled:

“Storm Chasers: Pursuing the ‘Why’ of Co-Occurring Behaviors in Youth with Disruptive Disorders.” ☔️⚡️🌪️🌧️

Our outstanding presenters, Drs. Danny McNeil, Mindy Le, and Nimisha Lingappa — along with discussant Dr. Sarah Vas, guided us through a creative and insightful journey. Using severe weather and natural phenomena as metaphors, they brought clarity to complex concepts —highlighting how to recognize disruptive, impulse-control, and conduct disorders, and better understand the “why” behind externalizing behaviors in youth.

This is the kind of Grand Rounds that stays with you — sparking conversations long after the presentation is over.

Thank you to everyone who makes these moments happen — week after week. 💜

How do you end your workday? 🤔 In Psychiatry, our faculty meet at a hidden gem for faculty journal club, bonding, and dinner of course! We caught up with a few who met this evening to discuss a very interesting research article and look who we found! 💜🎉

We love how our faculty make time to gather after their busy days, perpetually modeling the importance of connection, evidence-based learning, and critical thinking.
