🌊 Lymphatic Massage: Not Just for Post-Op Recovery

This past week, I completed a 12 hour continuing ed training in lymphatic massage for clients 4+ weeks post-op, and one of my favorite things about this work is how useful lymphatic techniques can be far beyond surgical recovery.

Your lymphatic system plays an important role in moving excess fluid from the tissues and supporting your body’s natural immune and waste-clearing processes. Unlike your circulatory system, it doesn’t have a heart pumping it along, so movement, breathing and gentle manual techniques can help encourage lymphatic flow.

✨ Lymphatic massage may be especially helpful for:
• Puffiness and mild fluid retention
• Swelling after flying or long periods of sitting
• That heavy, sluggish feeling after travel
• Supporting recovery after strenuous activity
• Gentle relaxation when deeper massage doesn’t feel appropriate
• Supporting healthy lymphatic circulation
• Post-surgical swelling and recovery once you’ve reached the appropriate stage of healing and have medical clearance

And yes, this is a very different style of massage. Lymphatic work uses light, rhythmic, intentional movements designed to encourage fluid toward the body’s lymphatic pathways. More pressure isn’t better here. The technique is the point.

With so many of my clients visiting Siesta Key after a flight, spending long days traveling, or simply wanting to feel a little less puffy and more comfortable in their bodies, I’m excited to bring more of this work into my practice. 🌴

And for those recovering from cosmetic or other surgical procedures, I now have additional training specifically focused on lymphatic care beginning around four weeks post-op, when appropriate and cleared by your medical provider.

Sometimes your body doesn’t need to be worked harder. It needs a little help getting things moving. 💧

Over the years, dozens of clients have returned to my table seeking continued relief from chronic head and neck pain. One thing I’ve learned is that effective neck work isn’t about how deep a therapist goes—it’s about precision. Understanding the anatomy, identifying the structures involved, and treating the right muscles with intention makes all the difference.

The neck has one of the most important jobs in the body: supporting and positioning the head while protecting the pathway between the brain and the rest of the body. The skull rests atop the cervical spine, surrounded by dozens of small, intricate muscles that work continuously throughout the day. They stabilize, rotate, flex, and extend the head with nearly every movement we make. Over time, repetitive stress, poor posture, injury, emotional tension, or overuse can cause these muscles to become restricted and dysfunctional.

As tension builds, mobility often decreases. Turning your head becomes more difficult, looking up or down may feel restricted, and surrounding tissues begin compensating for muscles that are no longer functioning efficiently. Left untreated, chronic muscular tension may contribute to headaches, tension-type migraines, TMJ discomfort, and persistent pain throughout the neck and shoulders.

Massage therapy is one of the most effective conservative approaches for relieving muscular tension in the neck. During the Tide Breaker treatment, I incorporate precise neuromuscular techniques designed to release restricted tissue, improve circulation, restore mobility, and encourage the nervous system to relax. My goal is not simply to help you feel better for the day, but to help your muscles move and function more comfortably over time.

Helping someone regain movement after living with chronic pain is one of the most rewarding parts of my work.

That’s why I created the Tide Breaker—a treatment dedicated entirely to relieving chronic head, neck, jaw, and shoulder tension.

Available in 30-, 60-, and 90-minute sessions, each treatment is designed to meet you where you are. The longer the session, the more comprehensively I can address the interconnected muscles that contribute to chronic tension patterns.

For longstanding or recurring issues, I often recommend beginning with a series of four to six treatments spaced one to two weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions every two to four weeks to help preserve your progress and reduce the likelihood of symptoms returning.

It's been a while since I've shown up here, so I thought I'd reintroduce myself.

During COVID, I made the decision to close my private massage practice and step into an entirely different world—running a business in the world of logistics. This was my area of expertise prior to massage, and was the best fit in an 'essential' environment of the time. It was a season of growth that challenged me in ways I never expected and taught me valuable lessons about leadership, systems, and business.

But massage therapy has always been where my heart is.

When I felt the pull back to the profession, I returned to hands-on work at the Ritz-Carlton Spa to sharpen my skills, reconnect with clients, and immerse myself in a world-class wellness environment. Not long after, I took a leap of faith and purchased a massage business on Siesta Key.

Today, I'm proud to be the owner of Hands of Light Massage & Day Spa, where I continue to provide therapeutic bodywork while building something bigger than myself.

My vision extends beyond the treatment room. I want to help elevate our profession through education, mentorship, and public awareness—teaching clients, supporting fellow therapists, and helping people better understand the incredible impact skilled therapeutic massage can have on health, recovery, and quality of life.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this journey. I'm excited for what's next. 🤍
