South Dakota Veterinary Technician Association

South Dakota Veterinary Technician Association An association to bring information, continuing education and power to the veterinary technicians of South Dakota.

06/20/2026

Do you know the difference between a licensed, registered or certified veterinary technician?
And do you know what is recognized in the state you work or credentialed in?

At this time , every state has their own regulations.
South Dakota recognizes registered veterinary technicians.
Registration takes place after you’ve completed a veterinary technician program through an AVMA accredited program, passed the national exam (VTNE), become employed by a veterinarian and register with the South Dakota Board of Veterinary Medicine.

Minnesota recently passed legislation to change from certified to licensed. As of July 1st, if you have gone through the process, credentialed veterinary technicians will be licensed in Minnesota!!! Congratulations Minnesota for taking a step for title protection!!
