Herbalism has always been the medicine of the people. By its very design, it’s accessible and approachable for anyone who wants to work with it. And while I do value a relationship with nature and hope we all find one, I can also appreciate that we’re all on different parts of the journey.

Starting out, I took herbal medicine to help with symptoms - mint for a stomach ache, goldenrod for allergies…and then I began to recognize nature as a living entity, and a generous one at that. But the evolution of my relationship with nature took time, and was born from gratitude for what she did for me before I even knew enough to thank her for her gifts.

We all start somewhere. “Using” nature to serve our purposes is just another form of consumerism. But approaching the medicine with a need and a hope can be a beautiful entry into a relationship of reciprocity: mutual support, protection, and appreciation.

What a fun class this morning with this group of little herbalists!

We started by choosing an herbal ally to spend some time observing…and I tested the kids at the end by complaining of “ailments” so they could offer their herbal ally to help.

We took a plant walk, made some plant art, and learned how to make a spit poultice!

This class was the first of more to come, next up is Autumn! We’ll explore the plants Autumn offers and learn how to use them to stay healthy and well. Be on the lookout for more details soon.
