Heavenly Kingdoms, Spiritual Realms, and Higher Planes of Consciousness

The Garden of Eden. The Telestial, Terrestrial, and Celestial Kingdoms. The Physical, Astral/Emotional, Mental, and Spiritual Planes.

Across centuries of religious and metaphysical exploration, we encounter fascinating descriptions of existence beyond the physical world.

In 1758, Emanuel Swedenborg described three distinct heavens. In 1888, H. P. Blavatsky explored the nature of existence and consciousness in The Secret Doctrine. By 1904, Rudolf Steiner was examining the relationship between the physical world, the soul, and spiritual realms.

Different centuries, different philosophies, yet remarkably similar questions.

Are these descriptions of places we go, conditions of existence, states of consciousness, or perhaps different ways of expressing something we don't yet fully understand?

How much of our understanding comes from ancient teachings, spiritual experiences, symbolism, or interpretations passed down through generations?

When different traditions describe heavenly kingdoms and higher planes of existence, are they describing entirely different realities—or exploring the same mystery through different languages and symbols?

I'd be fascinated to hear how others understand these mysteries, particularly where different traditions seem to intersect.

TWO SIDES OF APPLEGARTH. ONE CONTINUING STORY. 🌿✨

Some of you know us as Applegarth Apothecary. Others are discovering BRYOGROW. These two images bring together the different parts of a dream that has always belonged to one business.

Our full name is Applegarth Greenhouse & Apothecary LLC, and BRYOGROW is our registered doing-business-as name for the vivarium laboratory.

The same magic runs through everything we do.

The name Applegarth was inspired by Mary Stewart’s Merlin trilogy. To me, it evokes a place where nature, knowledge, magic, and mystery meet—our own little school of discovery, where curiosity leads to deeper understanding.

When Mom fell, I made the decision to care for her for the rest of her life. That meant reshaping the business around being here for her. A traditional greenhouse was impractical, and maintaining a separate storefront in the city, with all its overhead, was no longer sustainable.

Some parts of the dream had to wait. Others found a new way to grow.

I redesigned the garage into an indoor growing laboratory, specializing in extraordinary plants that are difficult to find in our region. Under lights and carefully managed rainfall, BRYOGROW became a place to study, nurture, and share these living treasures.

I wanted to help people create a little magic inside their own homes—especially through the long, dark days of winter.

And the apothecary will return.

The gems, crystals, minerals, and magical ritual items are still part of Applegarth’s future. There will be room for the tools and treasures that support your craft, whatever personal form that takes. And perhaps, someday, there will be a greenhouse, too.

Alongside those offerings, I want to share the understanding that comes from years of study and research: thoughtful exploration of esoteric traditions, their histories, symbolism, and practices, with care for accuracy and respect for your individual path.

My hope for Applegarth has always reached beyond what sits on a shelf.

Not just a magic shop. Not just an apothecary. Not just a greenhouse or vivarium laboratory.

A trusted source for knowledge, discovery, and personal evolution.

I’m bringing the pieces together, one step at a time, while keeping Mom at the center of my priorities. Thank you for giving this dream room to grow.

✨ We’re almost at 1,000 followers—and you can help push us over the top!

Please like and follow Applegarth Apothecary Gift Shoppe, share this post with your friends, and invite them to join us. Every new follower helps more people discover what we’re creating here in Soda Springs.

Come for the plants, the crystals, the curiosity, or the magic. There’s room for you in this next chapter.

WE MAKE IT RAIN. INDOORS. 🌿

About every hour, a little rain falls inside BRYOGROW. Beneath the LEDs, water beads on unusual leaves, ferns spread across branches, and tropical plants grow without a ray of sunlight.

These photographs are a glimpse inside.

BRYOGROW isn’t your ordinary plant or pet shop. It’s a living laboratory—built to explore what makes these plants thrive and share that knowledge with you.

The lights follow a 12-hour daily cycle. And our rain starts with reverse osmosis: filtration that removes most dissolved salts and minerals from the water. That gives us low-mineral water resembling the rain these plants would encounter in nature, helping limit mineral deposits on delicate foliage and salt buildup in growing media.

Getting that water to every enclosure takes an intricate network of pumps, tubing, and carefully positioned misting nozzles woven throughout the laboratory. Each tank receives an amount of moisture suited to the plants growing inside. Individual drains then carry excess water into a shared drainage system, keeping those little rainstorms contained.

Every plant gets our attention. We watch its growth, research its habitat, and adjust its conditions. When a plant struggles in one enclosure, we may move it to another and observe how it responds.

Many of these plants are uncommon in everyday horticulture, and reliable growing information can be hard to find. Learning their needs is part of the work—and part of the fascination.

After more than 30 years in horticulture, I’m still finding plants that make me stop and look closer. BRYOGROW is where I follow that curiosity and share what I’m learning, so you can grow them with greater confidence in your own home, terrarium, or vivarium.

Come see what’s growing—and what we’re discovering.

BRYOGROW is receiving another shipment of plants—and many of these are unusual, uncommon, and rare varieties you won’t find in a typical garden center.

I’ve spent most of my life in horticulture, where knowing plants by their Latin botanical names was part of the job. Now BRYOGROW is giving me the chance to learn an entirely new world of tropical plants and become an even nerdier botanist.

Come discover plants from parts of the world most of us never get the chance to see, and experience just how beautiful and diverse the botanical world really is.

🌿 BRYOGROW Vivarium Laboratory is opening around the beginning of October.

And while it may be cold and miserable outside, inside the laboratory it’s warm, humid, green, and tropical.

DON’T THROW OUT THAT OLD AQUARIUM

Have an old aquarium sitting empty in the basement, garage, or closet?

Turn it into a living tropical vivarium.
You don’t necessarily need to buy an expensive pre-built enclosure. With a little planning, an old glass aquarium can become a beautiful planted environment for your home, office, or even the space beside your computer.

At BRYOGROW Vivarium Laboratory, we can help guide you through the conversion.

We generally recommend starting with a few important upgrades:
🌿 Drill the tank for drainage so excess water has somewhere to go.
💧 Add a misting system to maintain tropical humidity.
💡 Use appropriate lighting — in many cases, equipment you already own may work perfectly well.
🪵 Source rock, wood, roots, and other hardscape materials locally whenever possible.
🌱 Then begin building the substrate, drainage layers, hardscape, mosses, tropical plants, and microfauna that turn a glass box into a functioning little ecosystem.

A good vivarium does not have to be built in one afternoon.

In fact, we encourage people to treat it as a several-step project. Schedule recurring appointments with BRYOGROW and we can help you work through the build one stage at a time — from drilling and drainage to planting, lighting, humidity, cleanup crews, and eventually preparing the enclosure for its inhabitants.

BRYOGROW Vivarium Laboratory is preparing to open in early October. Our home-based, appointment-focused laboratory will offer tropical and vivarium plants, mosses, microfauna, supplies, and hands-on guidance for people who want to create living environments of their own. Whether you are starting with an old aquarium, building your first vivarium, or developing something more advanced, you can schedule visits as your project progresses and build it step by step with us.
Bring us the aquarium you already have.

Bring your questions.

Build it yourself — with someone there to help you do it right.

If you have an unused aquarium you’ve been wondering what to do with, send BRYOGROW a message. It may be the beginning of your own little piece of the rainforest.

How Bryogrow Came to Be

Bryogrow began with a fairly simple question: What was I supposed to do with everything I knew?

I had moved home to a small town in southeastern Idaho to care for my 95-year-old mother. I had a degree in Agricultural Education and Horticulture and decades of experience growing plants, but I was living in a place with long winters, a short growing season, and relatively few opportunities to put that experience to use. At the same time, I have never been particularly good at sitting still. I have an almost unquenchable need to learn, experiment, build, and discover.

One of the subjects that had always fascinated me was mosses and liverworts. Walking through forests and seeing the extraordinary diversity of these tiny plants made me wonder whether I could bring that world indoors. That curiosity led me into the study of bryophytes—the group of plants that includes mosses and liverworts—and eventually gave the new venture its name: Bryo, from bryophytes, combined with Grow.
Bryogrow was born.

But learning how to grow mosses indoors opened a much larger door.

I began experimenting with terrariums and vivariums and quickly discovered an entire area of horticulture that was largely new to me. I knew traditional greenhouse crops and tropical houseplants, but vivariums introduced me to miniature ferns, orchids, bromeliads, aroids, creeping plants, aquatic plants grown emersed, and other species requiring the stable humidity, light, moisture, and temperature of a tropical rainforest.

Modern LED lighting made something possible that would have been far more difficult years ago: I could create those environments indoors without depending on natural sunlight.

So I converted my garage into a laboratory.

The building was insulated and temperature controlled. Electrical systems were adapted for a wet growing environment. A drain was installed. Reverse-osmosis water was distributed throughout the room, and the individual enclosures were connected to irrigation systems that could provide regular artificial rainfall. Because draining dozens of tanks individually would have been impractical, I designed a centralized drainage system connecting the enclosures directly to the building drain.

Before long, nearly every usable space in the garage contained a tank, enclosure, propagation area, or growing system.
Then came the plants.

Finding them proved far more difficult than building the laboratory. Many of the species used by serious vivarium growers are not produced by ordinary commercial greenhouses. I began tracing plants through collectors, specialty growers, hobbyists, and importers, learning where they originated and how they could be legally acquired, propagated, and eventually offered for resale.

Each plant became an experiment.

Could it tolerate constant humidity? Did it need moving water or merely moist substrate? How much light produced compact growth? Would it climb, creep, attach to wood, grow emersed, or remain small enough for a miniature landscape?

As the tanks matured, the laboratory gradually became its own production system. Plants grow until an enclosure becomes crowded, then portions are harvested, propagated, and grown into new plants for sale.

But a vivarium is more than plants.

I also began building the biological systems that make these environments function. Springtails and isopods were introduced to consume decaying organic matter, control molds and fungi, and recycle nutrients. That meant learning an entirely new discipline: how to culture and maintain the organisms that form the foundation of a miniature ecosystem.

The next stage will bring those systems full circle with dart frogs inhabiting selected mature vivariums. Their presence will add another part of the biological cycle while eventually allowing Bryogrow to produce captive-bred animals alongside the plants and microfauna that support them.

What began as an experiment with moss had become a functioning vivarium laboratory.

Bryogrow has also grown beyond the laboratory itself. Developing and maintaining a collection like this requires a continuing source of income, so I began establishing relationships with specialty growers and suppliers who could provide unusual tropical plants for local retail customers as well as plants specifically suited for vivariums. Those sales help support the laboratory, utilities, propagation work, and continued expansion of the collection.
And throughout the entire process, I kept researching.

Every plant raised another question, and every question led to another investigation. Eventually I realized that the information I was collecting might be just as valuable as the plants themselves. That became Bryogrow.com—a growing horticultural reference where the knowledge developed through the laboratory can be organized and shared with other vivarium keepers.

Bryogrow therefore isn't simply a greenhouse or a plant store.

It is the result of taking decades of horticultural experience into an unfamiliar field and becoming a student again. It is part nursery, part laboratory, part ecosystem, and part continuing experiment.

And strangely enough, it all began with a little moss growing on the forest floor.
