Self-employed, freelancing, or retiring before 65?
Here’s your 2027 Open Enrollment cheat sheet for buying your own health insurance. Don’t skip #3. It’s the one people forget to check.
📈 THE PROBLEM
If you buy your own coverage, Marketplace insurers are proposing another year of higher premiums.
The median proposed increase nationally for 2027 is about 15%.
What you actually pay depends on your state, plan, income, and whether you qualify for financial help.
💡 THE PART NO ONE EXPLAINS
Depending on your income and where you live, you may qualify for financial help, like premium tax credits, that lowers your monthly premium.
Check before you assume you won’t qualify.
In Pennsylvania, for example, premium tax credits are only available through Pennie, the state’s official health insurance marketplace.
🧭 3 THINGS TO DO BEFORE YOU PICK A PLAN
1️⃣ Check what financial help you qualify for before ruling out Marketplace coverage.
2️⃣ Compare the total cost, not just the premium. Look at the deductible, copays, prescriptions, doctors, hospital costs, and out-of-pocket maximum.
The cheapest premium ≠ the cheapest plan to actually use.
3️⃣ Know what’s excluded.
Other coverage options may be available outside of ACA major medical, but they don’t all work the same way.
Some may exclude pre-existing conditions, limit prescription coverage, restrict provider access, or have other coverage limitations.
Ask what isn’t covered before you buy.
🚫 MYTH: “It’s full-price major medical or nothing.”
✅ TRUTH: There may be more options available than you realize. The right one depends on your health, budget, eligibility, and what you actually need covered.
