Why Is This Ableist? — Part 1

“You don't look disabled.”

“I'm only going to be a minute.”

It's easy to hear examples of ableism and memorize a list of things we're “not supposed to say or do.”

I'd rather explain why they're a problem.

Because once you understand the barrier or assumption underneath something, you don't need a rulebook to start recognizing ableism in everyday life.

Reiki doesn’t have to be a whole production.

Some nights my Reiki practice happens exactly where I already am: in bed, comfortable, with whatever support my body needs.

That’s also one of the things I love about offering distance Reiki. You don’t need to drive anywhere, transfer onto a table, get dressed up, or make your home presentable.

You can receive from your bed, couch, recliner, or wherever your body feels most supported.

I've intentionally chosen to keep my Reiki certification program small.

I offer Reiki 1 once each spring and Reiki 2 once each fall.

That gives students time between levels to actually practice Reiki, build confidence, ask questions, and integrate what they've learned instead of rushing from one certification to the next.

Classes are taught live online in small cohorts, with plenty of guided practice along the way.

This challenged something I assumed I understood about disability history.

While reading Kim Nielsen's A Disability History of the United States, I learned that the history of freak shows is more complicated than simply disabled people being exploited.

Exploitation existed. And so did disabled agency.

Some disabled performers found ways to earn money, travel, build careers, and gain independence through these performances when many other opportunities weren't available to them.

Disabled people weren't simply people history happened to.

They were making choices within the worlds they lived in, too.

Ableism isn't always obvious discrimination.

Sometimes it's a comment we've heard a hundred times. Sometimes it's an assumption about what disability is supposed to look like. Sometimes it's something built into a space, policy, or everyday interaction.

And sometimes people participate in ableism without realizing they're doing it.

That's why learning to recognize it matters.

I'm going to break down WHY each of these examples is ableist in the next two videos.

“Disabled People Don't Come Here” Is Backwards ♿️

If disabled people aren’t coming to your business, organization, church, event, or community space, their absence doesn’t necessarily mean they aren’t interested.

It might mean there’s a barrier.

Can they get inside?

Can they navigate once they’re there?

Can they use the bathroom?

Is there somewhere to sit?

Can they request accommodations without jumping through hoops or unnecessarily disclosing personal information?

Have disabled people tried participating before and decided it simply wasn’t worth the difficulty?

Sometimes who isn’t in the room is accessibility information too.

If you help run a space or organization, start asking why. ♿️
