Have your say for the millions of sows and pigs in Canada! New rules for the care of pigs are being developed—an opportunity that only comes around every ten years!
The Code of Practice sets the minimum standards farmers must follow, and your voice is essential to shaping these guidelines. From now until June 4th, submit your top three concerns about the welfare of pigs. Key issues we have identified include freedom of movement for sows during their whole gestation and lactation periods, access for all pigs (including sows and boars) to meaningful enrichment, reduced stocking density and ammonia levels, alternative management practices and pain management for physical alterations, and improving management of newborns.
Remember, the Code focuses on on-farm welfare, so keep your concerns within that scope. Submissions must be respectful, concise (around 14 words per concern), and written in your own words.
Your input matters! At Humane Canada, we’re bringing forward positive progressive change informed by animal welfare science and ethics. Join us in creating a better future for sows, boars and pigs in Canada!
