MYTH OR FACT? 🤔

“If a child can say the word, they don’t need it on their AAC device.” 🙅‍♀️ MYTH

✅ FACT: A child may be able to say a word sometimes but still need AAC to communicate that word consistently! Speech can be affected by fatigue, emotions, sensory overload, excitement, or the communication environment. Having a word available on their AAC device gives them another way to express themselves when speaking is difficult.

🗣️ Remember: AAC is not just for words a child cannot say. It supports communication, independence, and access to language!

💙 Our goal is communication, not limiting how a child communicates. If a child uses speech AND AAC, both are valuable!

Communication is so much more than spoken words. Nonspeaking children may communicate through:

🖼️ Pictures & symbols

Let’s remember to listen to all forms of communication, honor every attempt to connect, and provide access to reliable communication.

Every voice matters—even when it doesn’t come through speech. 💙
