Happy end of August. To wrap up this month we just had a great interview on the TBI One Love with Dr. Xiao Han.

She is a postdoctoral neuroscientist at Stanford University & Howard Hughes Medical Institute (Thomas C. Südhof Lab) and co-founder of Science in Motion.

In addition, she currently serves as an Early Career Editorial Board Member of The Innovation (Cell Press), Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics, and Brain-X. Dr. Han’s research focuses on synaptic transmission and brain disorder with work published in journals including Molecular Cell, Seminars in Cancer Biology, Nature Neuroscience, Cell Research, etc.

Science in Motion is a nonprofit pioneering avant-grade science–art organization. Its mission is to explore new experimental art forms and develop original, precise, and personalized approaches to science communication — using art to give voice to scientists and help their ideas reach a wider audience. The organization brings together individuals with both scientific and artistic backgrounds, building research networks and exploring new ways to share knowledge and values.

Let's welcome the newest TBI One Love Survivor: from the United Kingdom.

On the 5th of March last year(2025) she woke up with the worst headache and had been having terrible pains in her neck for a couple of week. She started being sick in the loo, her vision went , the feeling in her legs went and she sustained a seizure on the floor. After rushed to hospital, they located a lesion on my spinal cord ( they saw some diagnosis and it turned out to be a dissection and a stroke caused by a chiropractor who manipulated her neck!

He is the founder of Brain Revives, an education program built for the stretch of recovery that begins the day someone goes home.His work focuses on a gap he watched happen from inside the hospital: patients are made medically stable, discharged, and then left without a practical plan for daily life. Brain Revives exists to fill that window with structure around fatigue, sleep, attention, memory, pacing, and getting back to the things that matter. It works alongside a person's care team, never in place of it.

From outside to inside, the protective layers of the brain consist of the scalp, skull, and three membranous layers called the meninges—the dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater—which finally encase the outer neural tissue of the cerebral cortex.

Our Protective Shell:
•Scalp: The outermost soft tissue layer. It covers and insulates the head.
•💀Skull: The hard bony structure (cranium). It shields the brain from hard hits.

The Meninges (Middle Layers):
•Dura mater: The tough outer membrane. It sticks close to the inner skull.

A new neuroscience study demonstrates that musical melodies imagined in the human brain can be decoded and reconstructed using surface electrode brain signals.

🚨NEW DISCOVERY: an ADHD 🧠 actually produce deep sleep waves during the day, revealing that what looks like distraction is really part of your 🧠 falling asleep.

For this study, researchers compared sleep-like brain activity from 32 medication-withdrawn individuals with ADHD to 31 neurotypical(without ADHD) as participants performed a task requiring sustained attention. They located that, ADHD group had more sleep-like brain activity, which was associated with more lapses in attention. Further analyses revealed that this activity may drive the relationship between ADHD and attention problems, including task errors, slower reaction times, and sleepiness. With, neurotypical (non ADHD), auditory stimulation during sleep can boost slow waves, which in turn could reduce sleep-like brain activity the following day while awake. Pinggal says a potential next step could be exploring whether this approach similarly diminishes sleep-like activity during wakefulness in those with ADHD.

🧠 Understanding the Different Types of Paralysis

Paralysis is the loss of muscle function in part or all of the body. It can happen suddenly, such as after a stroke or traumatic injury, or develop over time due to neurological or neuromuscular diseases. The location of the injury to the brain, spinal cord, or nerves often determines which parts of the body are affected.

This infographic highlights six common types of paralysis:

🔹 Monoplegia – Paralysis affecting one limb (one arm or one leg). It may result from a stroke, nerve injury, spinal cord injury, or certain neuromuscular disorders.

🔹 Hemiplegia – Paralysis on one side of the body, often involving both the arm and leg. This is commonly caused by a stroke but can also occur after a traumatic brain injury, brain tumor, or cerebral palsy.

🔹 Paraplegia – Paralysis of both legs, usually caused by an injury or disease affecting the thoracic, lumbar, or sacral spinal cord. Sensation, bowel, and bladder function may also be affected depending on the level and severity of the injury.
