Problem statements: "You can't do anything for arthritis" or "you can't do anything for a herniated disc". Usually that means the person has given up on hope to properly manage a physical problem that is affecting the way their entire body moves.

Americans have been trained to accept pills and surgeries as the only remedy to conditions like these and many more. That's another problem.

My PT wants to change the way you are thinking about your health condition. You can do a lot for your arthritis and herniated disc or fill in the blank condition. There are always things you can do when it's acutely painful, having a flare up, or just having a pretty good day with it. Where ever you go, your body goes with you. So ignoring it rather than setting your intention on helping it needs to shift in thought.

Physical Therapy (PT) is to an "injured/weakened" person as Physical Training (PT) is to a "healthy" person. The only difference is what goal you are trying to achieve. Both require the right recipe of purposeful movements and time. There's work that can be done.

What do these two people also have in common? A choice to set up their body in such a way that vitality flows through their body through their understanding of diet, hydration, posture, and sleep. These keystone habits of health living can get over looked and it's a lifetime factor that can either appreciate or depreciate over time.

It's never too late to re-start healing your body or get a tune-up on your health.

Fun Fact! There are many cells in the body that function for only so long then they get broken down, cleaned up, recycled and replaced with new cells of the same kind.

This happens for example in bone tissue (osteoclast cells breakdown damaged/old bone and osteoblasts rebuild with new bone cells) and in muscles (fibroblasts and satellite cells rebuild muscle fibers after mechanical stress breaks down muscle).

Whether you are trying to build muscle mass or bone density, understanding the process of converting energy and directing that energy to meet your physiological goal is of high importance.

Problem-Cluster of the month.... craniofacial pain. This describes clients who have pain around their face, jaw, eye, forehead, temple, or head. Stressors can make this worse and each person may have varying levels of sensitivities to certain stimulation (sound, smells, light, movement, fatigue, foods, drugs, etc). It could feel like tension, squeezing, burning, numbness, tingling, aching, sharp, itching, dizziness or tightness.

Finding help for even what you think sounds weird is important. Because there are other reasons for symptoms like this to occur, check with your doctor or dentist if any new symptoms come up. Self assess factors like awkward postures, unsupportive pillow, dental appliance, and insufficient movement. When you need evaluation and treatment for musculoskeletal problems, My PT is here to listen even when it sounds like... it might be all in your head.

About 85% of our clients pay for their treatment with us. That's because My PT is an out-of-network provider in the eyes of private or government health insurance*. Dr. Tom chooses this path because it creates an unencumbered healing environment.

The choice to treat, what to treat with, and how long to treat becomes the ultimate decision of the practitioner and the client. No 3rd parties to dictate paths. We train our clients to become the "PT for themselves" at home and knowing when to ask for more help from us.

By not following the norm, not participating with all health insurances is a refreshing experience yet challenged by the paradigm created by health insurers. Those who step outside the mindset of insurance-only based PT will get more for their dollar compared to "covered" care.
