What part of the body is like a golf ball sitting on a tee?

The glenohumeral joint of the shoulder has been called a ball and socket joint for years. It is better described as a golf ball on a tee. That's because the “socket” acts more like a small, shallow cup. To explain how the shoulder is both versatile and vulnerable, consider this golf analogy. In order to keep the ball on the tee before hitting the ball with the club, criteria must be met:

1. The tee is stabilized into the ground
2. The tee is level or within a small margin of error
3. The ball is placed in the center of the cup
4. External forces do not exceed the strain needed to push the ball out of the cup (wind, accident tapping with club).

Those same criteria must also be met for the shoulder to function without injury. Of course the main shoulder joint uses muscles, a labrum and ligaments to stabilize the joint during movement and rest. The shoulder ball (humeral head) must stay in the center of the cup of the shoulder blade (glenoid fossa) to prevent dislocation or subluxation. The core and scapular muscles act like the golf tee.

Because the shoulder has more of a loose connection to the cup compared to the socket of the hip, the shoulder provides more range than the hip joint. Thats why shoulder stabilization and rotator cuff training is imperative when rehabilitating shoulder injuries.

PT Trivia… what organ do humans have voluntary control over?

Skeletal muscle! We were taught years ago that there are over 650 muscles in the body. There is a small group of people who believe we just have 1 muscle because of the continuous connection of fascia within and around muscles fibers bundles.

Does this change the way you view the health of your muscles?

Custom Physical Therapy means... we work together to achieve your physical goals based on the needs of you and your body. It's also the way I work best to provide a meaningful experience to my clients.

That also means, I don't rely on.....

1. Generic orders to fulfill from your doctor
2. Cookie-cutter approach to bank-off the health insurance companies
3. Passing you around to lesser paid assistants to complete your PT
4. Hot or cold packs that you can do at home independently
5. Setting you up on a machine just to walk away to do paperwork
6. "Protocols" that everyone gets
7. Other people's opinion about your symptoms, you tell me how you feel
8. My tools to fix you, it's the process governed by your body that directs our every action

Custom Physical Therapy starts with an Evaluation and the Treatment begins that very same visit. My PT accommodates clients with single sessions, weekly sessions, monthly sessions, or according to a prescribed amount. We make the decision together on what the plan can be.

What do you want to get out of your session with Dr. Tom…?

*Jump start or boost your current physical training/rehabilitation
*Tune up your body’s tight muscles and stiff joints
*Learn how to relieve pain in your back (or wherever head-to-toe)
*“Just fix me”
*Fulfill orders from another health provider
*2nd opinion (or 3rd, 7th, 10th, don’t stop seeking help if you need it)

Prepare for your visit by answering the following questions:

1. What problem would you like Dr. Tom to help you with?
2. What goal do you want to achieve with Custom Physical Therapy?
3. What are you currently doing or have tried? Helps or hurts?
4. What percentage out of 100% would you say you are now?
5. What do you think needs to be worked on to get you to 100%

Custom PT means it's made just for you and not for everyone else. Find out what you might be missing by going beyond what health insurance allows with My PT.

When you're hurting, I mean more than those aches and pains, don't wait to find relief. Pains that dont go away, dont ignore them. Muscles that support joints tend to go weak and then larger muscles work more to compensate which starts a new movement pattern.

After pain has been around for 3 months or more this is considerd chronic. By this time muscles have been trained to move in this altered pattern. Top that with whatever else you are trying to physically accomplish whether its a personal record or just doing your job, your body is now out of tune and likely put of alignment. This is either called a muscle imbalance or a biomechanical imbalance.

Let a professional evaluate your movement and test your key components of the locomotive system:

1. Muscle lengthening
2. Muscle shortening
3. Muscle force production
4. Neurological competency
5. Joint stabilization
6. Joint mobility
7. Joint range of motion
8. Tests of function
9. Posture
10. Proprioception
