Reminder: Tuesday, June 9 is Primary Election Day in Nevada and the last day to vote in the primary election.

If you haven’t voted yet, now’s the time to make your plan. You can vote in person on Election Day, return your mail ballot, or use an official ballot drop box. Nevada voters can also track their ballot status online.

Find voting information, polling locations, and ballot resources here:

In an emergency, your people matter.

Who checks on you?
Who do you check on?
Who knows your medical needs?
Who has a spare key, your emergency contacts, or knows how to help if the power goes out or evacuation becomes necessary?

NNCIL’s “Who Are Your People?” resource encourages people to think about building a strong personal support network before an emergency happens. That can include family, friends, neighbors, caregivers, coworkers, peer support groups, or community organizations.

Take a few minutes to think about your people, share your emergency plan, and make sure everyone knows how to reach each other.

While it’s important to know how to take care of yourself and have a plan for doing so, it doesn’t mean you need to do it alone. There are very few of us who are capable of weathering an emergency situation without some help.

In this episode, Sofia spends time with Washoe County Sheriff's Office Deputy Rachael Diehl, who walks through what real, everyday home safety looks like. This isn’t complicated or expensive. It’s about simple habits that make a big difference. They go step-by-step through a home, covering how to secure entry points, what to pay attention to inside, and how to be prepared if something goes wrong.

Key Takeaways
-Lock it up (yes, even when you’re home): Doors and windows should stay locked. That includes sliding doors—adding something as simple as a broomstick or pipe in the track gives you an extra layer of protection. Deadbolts and secondary locks? Use them.
-Don’t make it easy to get in: Keep areas around windows clear so no one can climb up. And be mindful about who has access to things like smart lock codes.
-Light and visibility matter: Motion-sensor lights and doorbell cameras can go a long way in deterring unwanted activity. At night, keep things low-key inside—just enough light to move around safely.
-Stay on top of maintenance: Little things can turn into bigger problems. Clean out bathroom fans, unplug electronics when you’re away, and know how things like your garage door work if the power goes out.
-Be ready for emergencies: If something feels off, call 911 (or use text-to-911 if it’s available). And don’t wait until there’s a problem to figure out what you’d do.
-Your community matters: Neighbors can be one of your best safety tools. Staying connected means more eyes looking out for each other.
-Don’t forget your car: Lock it. Every time. And never leave your keys inside.

Thank you to everyone who attended the 21st annual Mark Wellman Adventure Day and Abilities Expo! 🚲

Kids and adults of all ability levels enjoyed the rock wall and cycling around the marina for the adventure portion, and got to know local organizations offering disability services and support at the expo. It was a perfect way to kick off the summer with education and entertainment!

We can’t wait to do it again next year! 🧗

📱 Tech Tuesday: Hearing Aids Have Come a Long Way

Today’s hearing technology can do a lot more than just make things louder.

Many modern hearing aids can:
🔊 Reduce background noise
📞 Connect directly to smartphones and TVs
🎧 Stream music and phone calls through Bluetooth
🗣 Focus on voices in crowded spaces
⌚ Pair with smartwatches and accessibility apps

There are also more options than ever before, including over-the-counter hearing aids for some people with mild to moderate hearing loss.

Hearing changes can affect communication, social connection, and overall quality of life, but technology is making support more accessible and customizable than ever.

Have you tried any hearing-related technology that’s made a difference for you? We’d love to hear about it in the comments. 💙

Hello, June. ☀️

A new month means new opportunities to connect, learn, advocate, and support one another.

As we head into summer, NNCIL is here to help people with disabilities and older adults throughout Northern Nevada live independently and stay connected to their communities. Whether that means peer support, advocacy, assistive technology, emergency preparedness, independent living skills, or simply helping people navigate resources, we’re proud to do this work alongside our community every day.

We hope June brings you sunshine, good moments, and opportunities to do something that makes life a little fuller. 💙
