With next week being Memorial Day, we wanted to take time to celebrate a few canine heroes. 🐾

Today, we are honoring Kaiser, a German Shepard who served in Vietnam with his handler Marine Lance Cpl. Alfredo Salazar. Kaiser and Salazar did more than 30 combat patrols and participated in 12 major operations together. Kaiser was killed in action in 1966, while on a search-and-destroy mission with “D” Company. They were on patrol and were ambushed by enemy forces. Kaiser was hit in the initial barrage and died while trying to lick Salazar’s hand. Kaiser was the first war dog to be killed in action during the Vietnam War.

Thank you for your service Canine Kaiser. Rest in peace sweet boy💕

With Memorial Day being this month, we want to take time to honor the animals who have served.

Today we honor Sergeant Reckless, a Mongolian mare purchased by US Marines in 1952 during the Korean War to carry ammo for the Recoilless Rifle Platoon. Her role and responsibilities grew beyond just hauling the heavy recoilless rifle. She carried supplies and ammunition to dangerous outposts, and carried wounded soldiers from the battlefield to safety. In 1953 she was present at one of the most storied battles of the Korean War, the Battle for Outpost Vegas, that saw more than a thousand American soldiers and twice as many Chinese soldiers killed in three days of fighting. In one single day of the battle, Sergeant Reckless made over 50 trips across rice paddies and up steep mountain trails to the front lines and back. At first she would make the trek with a Marine leading her, but after casualties grew so great that the Marines couldn’t spare any extra hands, Reckless made the trips on her own without any Marine, save for the occasional wounded laid across her back. She was wounded twice, hit both above her eye and in her left flank. Yet she continued to make the trip back and forth while under fire and without any urging by a human being.

🦴May is Pet Arthritis Awareness Month🦴

Also known as osteoarthritis (OA), or degenerative joint disease (DJD) and is one of the most common underdiagnosed and underrecognized diseases in as many
as 80% in dogs over the age of 8 years old, and 90% in cats over the age of 12. The disease process breaks down the cartilage inside the joint, leading to bone on bone friction which causes pain, inflammation, and reduced mobility.

Signs your dog may need an exam:
🦴Lameness, limping, or gait changes
🦴Unable to get comfortable while sitting or laying down
🦴Licking or chewing of the joint area
🦴Reluctant to play or go on walks like they used to
🦴Behavioral changes such as irritability
🦴Restlessness at night
🦴Persistent panting

Cats are generally less symptomatic so they can be trickier for their owners to recognize their signs of pain but that does not mean they are less affected. In fact, there are studies it might be quite the opposite.

Signs your cat may need an exam:
🦴Decrease in activity or playtime
🦴Reluctance to use stairs or jump on/off furniture
🦴Irritability
🦴Decreased self grooming
🦴Difficulty getting into the litter box
🦴Lameness or limping

With Memorial Day being this month, we wanted to take time to remember the animals that have served.

Today we honor Rags, a small shaggy mixed-breed, who was found on on the streets on Bastille Day of 1918 by Private James Donovan, a Signal Corps specialist with the American 1st Infantry. Private Donovan stumbled over what appeared to be a pile of rags, until the rags gave a sad whimper and a small bark. Within two weeks, both soldier and dog were sent off to the 2nd Battle of the Marne. Donovan's job was to string communications wire.📧 When the wires were ripped and shellfire was still incoming, the only way to get messages through was by runner. But runners were frequently killed or wounded. Donovan realized that a little dog could do the job and survive💪. Rags soon learned to take messages towards the sound of the American guns. Near the end of the war, Donovan and Rags were in the Argonne Forest, bound in by a thick fog. Rags was sent back with a message. He had just set off when the Germans began firing mustard gas shells. Rags was mildly gassed and hit in the paw with a splinter from a concussion shell. His right ear was badly mangled by this same shell and a needle-like sliver of shell fragment was embedded under his right eye. An American infantryman found him dazed and confused and delivered both the wounded little dog and the message. Donovan had also been gassed, but far more severely. He was carried back to the rear and reunited with his dog. Rags had the shell splinters removed from his paw, but he would remain blind in his right eye and deaf in his right ear for the rest of his life. Donovan was not as fortunate. He died in 1919 from the lingering effects of the mustard gas. Rags was awarded a special ribbon recognizing his wartime service and achievements🎗. His biography took its place among other official records of the Great War. Rags joined his beloved Private Donovan on March 22, 1936 at the remarkable age of twenty years old.

Thank you for your service Rags❤❤

With Memorial Day being this month, we want to take time to honor the animals who have served.😺

Today we honor Unsinkable Sam (originally Oscar). Sam was a WWII ship's cat who was used to control rodents that destroyed food supplies, chewed through vital electrical wiring, and spread diseases. He is known to have survived the sinking of three vessels in 1941: the German battleship Bismarck, and the British destroyers HMS Cossack and HMS Ark Royal. After surviving the Ark Royal sinking, he was retired to Gibraltar and later a sailors' home in Belfast.

Leave it to a cat to go through 3 shipwrecks and live to tell the story!😹
