Old photos can be incredibly tricky to work from when doing a portrait… but not impossible! The quality of the photo plays a huge part, and while we can sometimes do a bit of digital retouching to pull out more detail, some phots still are unfortunately just wont work for tattoo reference. Luckily, that wasn’t the case here!
A couple of years ago Liz had the honor of transforming two very old photos of this client’s grandparents into a single tattoo. It was done in two separate sessions, you can actually see just a bit of the first one healed peeking out on the side, so you can see how the opaque black & gray looks fresh (almost blue or silvery) versus healed and settled into the skin (closer to traditional black & gray, just a bit smoother and more solid).
