I just accomplished something that I have put off for a long time, and I’m very proud of myself for finally making it happen. I completed my Will and my Power of Attorney documents (medical and financial). These documents dictate who the guardian of my child will be, who can make medical and financial decisions on my behalf, and where and how my assets will be distributed.

People often assume they don’t need to take care of this until they are “old” or terminally ill. My lawyer recommends that as soon as a person turns 18 they really need to make that step to have medical power of attorney to protect themselves and assure that their wishes will be carried out if they cannot speak for themselves. My lawyer also recommends that as soon as people become parents they need their Will in place. A little effort now could potentially save a lot of future mental and emotional anguish and money.

Often we are resistant to taking the action to create or update our Will and Power of Attorney, but having those documents in place provides a layer of support that is incredibly empowering. I put it off because I thought it was going to take a lot of time for me to get everything together, but it didn’t. I expected this process to be more expensive than it was. Check your local library for virtual resources and free workshops on the subject.
