What if doctors could kill a breast tumor by simply freezing it to death, no scalpel, no cutting, no scar? That is exactly what a technique called cryoablation does, and for small tumors the results have been remarkable.
Here is how it works. Guided by ultrasound, a doctor slides a thin needle-like probe through the skin and directly into the tumor. The probe then unleashes intense cold, using liquid nitrogen to plunge the tissue to temperatures around 170 degrees below zero Celsius. An ice ball forms and engulfs the tumor, and the doctor can literally watch it swallow the cancer on the ultrasound screen.
The freezing is done in cycles, freeze, then thaw, then freeze again. This is the part that destroys the cancer. Ice crystals rip apart the cell membranes from the inside, the tissue is starved of blood, and the cancer cells die. Over the following weeks, the body simply reabsorbs the destroyed tissue, and eventually no trace of the tumor remains on scans.
Now the honest detail behind that 100 percent number. In studies, cryoablation achieved complete destruction in essentially all of the smallest tumors, particularly those under one centimeter. It works best on early stage, small, well defined cancers, and results dip as tumors get larger. This is not yet a universal cure for every breast cancer.
But the appeal is huge. It is minimally invasive, often done as an outpatient procedure with just local numbing, leaves virtually no scarring, and patients report high satisfaction. There is even a bonus effect, where the dying tumor may awaken the immune system to hunt cancer elsewhere.
For the right patients, a frozen needle might one day replace the operating table.
