Every day in physical therapy, I get a front row seat to what aging can look like.

The good.
The hard.
And yes… the ugly too.

And people always ask me:
“Doesn’t that make you afraid of getting old?”

Actually… no.

What scares me more is how many people believe decline is just something we’re supposed to accept.

That weakness, falls, poor balance, loss of independence, and needing more medications are just “normal aging.”

Aging is inevitable.
Decline isn’t always.

Your body is incredibly adaptable when you give it the right inputs:
✔️ Strength training
✔️ Balance work
✔️ Daily movement
✔️ Mobility
✔️ Consistency
✔️ A mindset that refuses to give up on yourself

You don’t have to become a different person overnight.
But small choices repeated over time matter more than most people realize.

I’m not afraid of getting older.
I’m passionate about helping people age stronger. 💪

👇

They became less afraid of falling.
They got stronger getting up.
Their balance improved.
Their confidence grew.
And suddenly… the floor stopped feeling like a dangerous place and started becoming another tool for independence.

Here’s the truth:
If you never practice getting down and back up from the floor, your body loses the strength, mobility, and problem-solving skills to do it when it actually matters.

Floor work isn’t just for athletes or kids.
It’s one of the most functional things we can train as we age.

Because longevity isn’t just living longer…
It’s being able to move through life with confidence. 💪

Even an aging adult expert that KNOWS muscle is the key to LONGEVITY can still be self conscious of said muscles!

💪🏻Build the muscle
💪🏻Be strong
💪🏻Do it unapologetically

Because you know that your future self will benefit from it all!

🏃🏼‍♀️‍➡️Trouble with walking downhill without falling forward or going too fast/festinating gait??

💥Have your patient control the walk while you (the therapist) pulls them!

So many benefits:
💪🏻eccentric quad
👣leading with legs not forward trunk posture!
🧠coordination and control of movement
🤩add sudden stops/accelerations for added reactive balance!!

💯Bonus strength exercise (sled pulls) for the therapist during your work day!

My cues:
🐌Slow it down
🚨Don’t let me pull you!
🦵🏻Lead with your legs!

Choices!

💪🏻I make daily choices to lift heavy and work on my strength for many reasons. But being able to move all of our heavy furniture and appliances alongside my husband when we moved and to be able to help with this increased outside workload (this is a pretty gnarly hill) as we just got some property…this is what it is all about. 😍

We want to make this space our forever space so to stay strong and age in place is a must for me! Strength will help this become my reality well into my aging years!

Freezing and Festinating Gait are tricky but there are ways PT’s can help!

💥Focus on Amplitude of movement and use some strategies (external cues, counting, marching, music, etc..).

💡I love using the for changing directions with the random pod lights and creating challenge with different colors to do different things. Example: red=hit off with right foot or with the reactive stick, blue=hit off with left foot or bounce a ball.

Less costly: use color dots and you call out the color to step to!

👉🏻Exercise 1: a four square step with red=right foot, blue=left foot and adding diagonal stepping! Pool noodles bonus for foot clearance cue!

👉🏻Exercise 2: obstacles with color challenge and even add a ball bounce or two to work on coordination and more dual tasking! Loads of turns, loads of visual scanning, loads of initiation of gait and go/no go work, and loads of small space navigation!

👉🏻Exercise 3: hurdles and pods to challenge more foot clearance and smaller spaces to turn in!

📢Shoutout to my amazing PTA for making an appearance .marie.smith.
