Feeling exhausted, losing hair, or struggling with brain fog? It may not be “just hormones.”
As a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, I often see women with low ferritin (low iron stores) that goes unnoticed for months or even years.
This can be especially important if you’re:
✔️ In perimenopause or menopause
✔️ Using hormone therapy (especially if you still have menstrual bleeding)
✔️ Taking a GLP-1 medication and eating less than usual
✔️ Experiencing heavy periods or recent postpartum changes
⚠️ Common Signs of Low Ferritin:
• Extreme fatigue or low energy
• Hair thinning or increased shedding
• Brain fog or trouble concentrating
• Feeling weak during workouts
• Shortness of breath with activity
• Dizziness or headaches
• Restless legs, especially at night
• Feeling cold all the time
• Brittle nails
💊 Why GLP-1 medications can play a role:
Many people eat significantly less while taking a GLP-1 medication, which can mean less iron intake. Some also experience nausea or food aversions that make it harder to get enough nutrient-rich foods.
🌸 Why hormones matter:
If you’re on hormone therapy and still having periods—or have a history of heavy bleeding—you may be losing more iron than you realize.
The good news? A normal hemoglobin does NOT rule out low ferritin. I’ve seen many women with “normal labs” who still had low iron stores and felt terrible.
