DIZZINESS A thorough vestibular and concussion evaluation is essential because dizziness, imbalance, vertigo, visual disturbances, and concussion symptoms can originate from multiple systems. Emily Averitt, DPT, Vestibular & Concussion Certified, uses a comprehensive evaluation process to assess the vestibular system, vision and eye movements, neurological function, cervical spine, positional vertigo, balance, and postural stability rather than simply treating the symptom of “dizziness.”
The information gathered during this evaluation helps Emily identify specific impairments and direct treatment toward what is actually contributing to the patient’s symptoms. Just as importantly, her detailed findings provide valuable clinical information that can be shared with a patient’s primary care provider or specialist when additional medical evaluation, imaging, or testing may be appropriate.
This creates a more coordinated approach to care—helping patients receive targeted treatment while keeping their healthcare team informed when further medical management is needed.

A Full-Circle Moment
 Welcome Home, LauraAnne!

For 25 years, Elite Physical Therapy & Balance has been honored to serve Shelbyville and Bedford County. Today, Elite is proud to celebrate an exciting milestone in the future of the company.

Julie Shoemake and Kasey Cartwright Parsons, PT, DPT, are proud to welcome LauraAnne Feldhaus Stewart, PT, DPT, OCS, as Elite’s newest Partner and Chief Operating Officer (COO).

A Shelbyville native, LauraAnne is the daughter of Henry and Jenni Feldhaus and granddaughter of the late Dr. Henry Feldhaus Jr., continuing a family legacy of service to this community.

LauraAnne’s story with Elite began more than 20 years ago. After graduating from Shelbyville Central High School in 2003, she worked at Elite as a physical therapy technician. What began as an early step toward a career in healthcare has now brought her full circle—back home as a partner in the company where her journey began.

LauraAnne earned her Doctor of Physical Therapy with honors from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and is a Board-Certified Orthopaedic Clinical Specialist (OCS). She brings 15 years of experience in clinical practice, healthcare leadership, management, and operations.

For Julie and Kasey, welcoming LauraAnne back to Elite as a business partner makes this moment especially meaningful. She brings clinical excellence, proven leadership, a tremendous work ethic, and a genuine commitment to the community.

From an Elite PT technician in 2003 to Partner and COO today—LauraAnne has truly come full circle.

Please join us in welcoming LauraAnne home and congratulating her on this exciting new chapter!

💙 Improving Patellar Tracking with Targeted Physical Therapy
After years of teaching step aerobics and kickboxing, Shelia Orrell has been working to improve patellar tracking and reduce stress at the front of her knee.
Her treatment combines NMES (neuromuscular electrical stimulation) to assist with quadriceps strengthening and McConnell taping to help guide the patella and improve tracking during movement.
Why can this be especially important for women? Women are reported to experience patellofemoral pain about twice as often as men. Differences in pelvic and lower-extremity anatomy, along with hip and knee mechanics, can contribute to increased lateral forces on the patella in some individuals.
A key part of Shelia’s program is improving quadriceps control, including the VMO (vastus medialis obliquus/inner quadriceps). Rather than working in isolation, the VMO functions with the rest of the quadriceps and hip musculature to help control the patella and knee during activity.
Better strength and movement control can help decrease the familiar symptoms of patellofemoral dysfunction—pain with prolonged sitting with the knee bent around 90°, going up or down stairs, squatting, and other loaded knee-flexion activities.
👏 Shelia is putting in the work to improve strength, alignment, tracking, and function—one step at a time.

Do you have NEUROPATHY?!

Burning, tingling, numbness, pain, or “pins and needles” in your feet or hands?

At Elite Physical Therapy, we treat peripheral neuropathy using the ReBuilderÂź, a specialized electrical stimulation device that we originally procured from Cancer Treatment Centers of America in Chicago, where this technology was being used to treat patients experiencing chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy.

The ReBuilder is designed to do more than provide traditional electrical stimulation. Its technology sends a signal, analyzes the nerve response, and creates a customized compensating signal — repeating this process 7.83 times per second to continually adjust the stimulation to the individual.

The ReBuilder is an FDA-cleared electrical stimulation device with indications that include symptomatic relief of chronic intractable pain, increasing local circulation, and muscle re-education.

Whether your neuropathy is related to chemotherapy, diabetes, or other peripheral nerve conditions, our therapists can evaluate your symptoms and determine whether ReBuilder treatment may be appropriate for you.

Don’t just live with the burning, tingling and numbness. Let us help you get moving and feeling better!

What is Vivistim!? We have had many people asking, so here is a better explanation.
Vivistim is an innovative technology designed to improve arm and hand function after stroke. During therapy, a small implanted device delivers gentle stimulation to the vagus nerve while specific arm and hand movements are performed. This pairing helps the brain strengthen and reroute neural pathways, encouraging neuroplasticity—the brain’s remarkable ability to reorganize and create new connections—so patients can regain meaningful upper extremity function.

We’re also proud that Megan King, OTR/L is a Vivistim Certified Occupational Therapist, leading this specialized program alongside Emily Averitt, DPT, and Jessi Keller, PTA, who work together to maximize each patient’s recovery.

Even more exciting, this technology continues to advance, with research and development underway to bring similar innovations to lower extremity rehabilitation, creating even more hope for stroke survivors in the future.

Congratulations, Bill, on leading the way, and thank you for trusting our team with your recovery journey. The future of stroke rehabilitation is here, and we’re proud to bring it to our community.

Go Ginger, Go! 💙

Every milestone starts with one brave step.

Our Neuro Team is proud to celebrate Ginger McCracken as she continues making incredible progress after a spinal cord injury. Pictured are Megan King, OT, and LauraAnne Feldhaus Stewart, DPT, working with Ginger on standing balance as she progresses beyond her wheelchair and toward greater independence.

The determination, grit, and perseverance Ginger brings to every session inspire us all. We have big goals ahead—and we can’t wait to celebrate each victory along the way.

Keep pushing, Ginger
 you’ve got this! đŸ’Ș
