Glyphosate is the world’s most widely used broad-spectrum systemic herbicide, primarily used in agriculture (notably Roundup) to control weeds, especially with genetically modified crops. It works by inhibiting a plant enzyme (EPSP synthase) necessary for growth. While highly effective, it faces scrutiny over health risks (linked to non-Hodgkin lymphoma) and environmental persistence, despite being a commonly used pesticide worldwide.
Key Aspects of Glyphosate:
Manufacturer: Originally introduced by Monsanto (now owned by Bayer) in the 1970s, it is now manufactured by many companies.
Mechanism of Action: It acts as a systemic, foliage-applied herbicide that kills weeds by inhibiting the shikimic acid pathway, a process not found in animals, though it can still pose risks to human health.
Health Effects: The WHO International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified it as “probably carcinogenic to humans” in 2015, with studies noting a link to non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
Environmental Impact: It binds tightly to soil, often lasting up to 6 months. It can remain in water for up to 91 days and has been detected in food, air, and human samples (urine/breast milk).
Usage: Applied on corn, soybeans, cotton, and in residential, industrial, and forestry settings.
