On May 16, World Celiac Disease Day reminds us that celiac disease is not a dietary trend — it is a lifelong immune-mediated condition that requires timely diagnosis, medical follow-up, and a strict gluten-free diet.

At FISPGHAN, we highlight the importance of education, early recognition, and specialized pediatric care to improve the health and quality of life of children and adolescents living with celiac disease.

Awareness leads to diagnosis. Diagnosis leads to better care.

For children with celiac disease, early diagnosis can make a lifelong difference.

Symptoms may be gastrointestinal or extraintestinal, and growth, nutrition, school life, and family routines can all be affected. That is why awareness, clinical suspicion, and access to specialized care are essential.

This World Celiac Disease Day, FISPGHAN joins the global call to promote education and evidence-based care for every child living with celiac disease.

Because growing well starts with recognizing the signs.

On World Celiac Disease Day, FISPGHAN calls on healthcare professionals to strengthen awareness, timely diagnosis, and long-term care for children and adolescents living with celiac disease.

A gluten-free diet is not a lifestyle trend—it is the only established medical treatment for celiac disease. For pediatric patients, delayed diagnosis can affect growth, nutritional status, bone health, and quality of life. Early recognition of symptoms, appropriate serologic testing, confirmatory diagnosis, and structured follow-up are essential.

As a federation of Societies, our role goes beyond diagnosis. We must educate families to monitor adherence and nutritional adequacy, prevent cross-contact, and support access to safe gluten-free foods.

Today is an opportunity to reinforce evidence-based care, reduce misconceptions, and advocate for children with celiac disease across our region. Together, we can turn awareness into better outcomes.

World Celiac Day
A gluten-free diet is not a fad: it's a medical treatment.

For people with celiac disease, consuming gluten can trigger an immune response that damages the small intestine and impairs nutrient absorption. Therefore, eliminating gluten is not a cosmetic choice or a dietary trend, but a health necessity indicated after a proper diagnosis.
It's also important to remember that not all digestive discomfort indicates celiac disease. Before removing gluten from your diet, it's best to consult a healthcare professional, undergo the appropriate tests, and receive nutritional guidance.
On this World Celiac Day, FISPGHAN and the sister societies promote more information, fewer myths, and greater empathy for those who live with this condition every day.

💚 Timely diagnosis, professional support, and safe foods make all the difference.
