Flooded Basement Dried Out — But Is It Really Clean and Healthy?

Drying a flooded basement is an important first step, but dry doesn’t automatically mean the indoor environment has returned to normal.

After the basement was dried, we performed follow-up testing to evaluate conditions that can’t always be seen with the naked eye. Using InstaScope V4, we can look at airborne biological particles, mold-related particles, PM2.5, PM10, VOCs, CO₂, temperature, humidity and dew point—with real-time results during the inspection.

We can also use Resuspension/Dust Testing to evaluate settled material that may have remained on floors, carpets, contents and other surfaces after the flooding and drying process.

A recent Bob Vila article explains how homeowners can test their homes for mold, including the use of inexpensive Petri-dish testing kits. It’s an important topic—but there’s more homeowners should know before interpreting those results.
