✨💗SPIRIT ANIMALS💗✨
🦩Since I was but a wee Witchling, I intuitively knew that my Spirit Animal was the ever-enchanting Flamingo. At first glance the Flamingo appears poised, graceful, and delicate. While this unmistakable blush bird is all those things, the always perfectly balanced Flamingo is also a gritty, tough as nails, gangster fowl. Flamingos demonstrate, perhaps, some of the most impressive adaptations to survive in the most extreme and unique habitats on Earth. Referred to as “soda” lakes, the high concentrations of carbonate salts in these bodies of water are so corrosive that it can burn the skin, making the water uninhabitable for most animals. However, the African Lesser Flamingo live, breed, and dwell in these caustic regions. European Andean Flamingos have adapted to the extreme conditions of high-altitude saline lakes and marshes in the Andes Mountains, and often live at such high altitudes that the water will freeze overnight, and the flamingos are forced to wait for the rising sun to melt the ice around their legs so they can finally wobble free and eat again. American flamingos have been spotted as far north as the Midwestern United States after a major hurricane, and have biologically evolved to survive environmental upheaval. They can drink saltwater when fresh water is not available, expelling the excess salt through their nasal cavities, or even drink boiling water from geysers in a bind.
When it comes to life, the Flamingos and I— for some reason— we don’t hide from the s**t, we run towards it. With wings wide open. To the trenches we go. We were made to Ramble, and NOTHING is go to keep us down. Not ruthless predators, not scarcity, not apocalyptic environments. To me and the Flamingos, the only enemy is thy self. 🙏
Flamingos are also natural dancers. They can’t help it. They have long legs, and what you assume is a backwards knee is actually their ankle. Thus, Flamingos are literally on pointe the majority of their life. Pretty pink ballerinas, they are. And that is all I have ever REALLY wanted to be… a pretty, pink ballerina… 🩰
Flamingo are also agile flyers and highly skilled travelers. Ahem… Sound like anyone else you know? Flamingos are migratory creatures and cast their roots often, albeit incredibly social birds who maintain lifelong relationships with their flock no matter the miles that separate them. Flamingos, too, like Witches, prefer to fly by night~ 🦩🖤✨
