❌ MYTH: "Employees just need time after a workplace su***de loss."

This is one of the most well-meaning. And most harmful. things organizations believe.

Here's the truth: time does not heal su***de loss. Support does.

Research consistently shows that su***de loss survivors are at significantly elevated risk for complicated grief, trauma responses, and even suicidal ideation themselves. Without structured, informed support, that risk doesn't shrink with time. It compounds.

And yet, most organizations respond to a su***de death with:

💜 A brief announcement
💜 A few days of EAP referrals
💜 Silence after that

That's not postvention. That's avoidance dressed up as sensitivity.

Postvention is the organized, evidence-based response to su***de loss. It's what protects the people left behind. And it's what your organization is likely not trained to deliver.

At Postvention Collective, we train HR teams, healthcare systems, and organizational leaders to respond with intention, not just instinct. Using Tracy Oeser's proprietary 4 Phases of Su***de Loss framework, your team learns exactly what survivors need, when they need it, and how to show up without making it worse.

Because postvention is prevention. And your employees deserve more than silence.

📝 If your organization doesn't have a postvention protocol, let's change that. Send us a message or visit the link below to learn about our corporate training programs.

They didn't know what to say. Now they do.

When a regional healthcare system reached out to Postvention Collective last year, their HR director said something I hear often:

"We had three employees lose someone to su***de in one year. We wanted to help. We just didn't know how."

After bringing Tracy in for a full-day corporate training built around The 4 Phases of Su***de Loss framework, here's what they shared:

✅ Staff reported feeling "equipped, not just informed"
✅ Two managers used the framework within 60 days to support grieving team members
✅ HR leadership called it "the most impactful training we've offered in five years"

That's what happens when training goes beyond awareness and gives people an actual map.

Not vague talking points. A real, phase-specific framework grounded in both psychology and lived experience, so your team knows exactly what a survivor needs, and when.

Because your employees are already encountering su***de loss. The question is whether they feel prepared to show up for each other.

💜 If your organization is ready to build that capacity, let's talk.

Drop a comment, send a DM, or visit the link below to schedule a discovery call with Tracy.

***CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT***

One of the goals when we created Postvention Collective, LLC's "Connecting a Stronger Chain" event was to create conversations about where things were missing within the work of su***de bereavement.

Sure, we could just have a traditional conference where people come and take notes all day but, that has never been the plan. The plan was to:

➡️ Teach about postvention for those who don't even know what that word means
➡️ Listen to attendees tell about what they wish they had for their work
➡️ To share new and exciting ideas within the field

One of those new and exciting ideas is how brain health affects traumatic bereavement and different ways to measure those effects on the person left behind. That was the reason for introducing Laurie Ellington, MA, LPC, MCC, NBC-HWC, RYT to the community so she could share about neurobiology of traumatic grief.

Today I'm excited to share that we are bringing in Ashley Williams, LCSW, CCTP-II, CBHP with The 22 Project. They are doing remarkable work with veterans to include imaging of the brain when preparing the veteran's treatment plan.

So, how does this tie to su***de bereavement? Well, a high percentage of our veteran population has been exposed to a su***de loss. That trauma gets intermixed by other trauma they have experienced and our veterans become dysfunctional if not suicidal themselves.

Additionally, we have data that shows how those bereaved by su***de are at a 60+% risk of dying by su***de if they don't get adequate support when in the acute phase of their loss. So, our veterans are already at risk due to their work experiences. Then we couple that with their own losses by su***de, and it can be a recipe for disaster.

To have The 22 Project recognizing how a veteran's physical brain looks internally both pre and post treatment is really groundbreaking!

So, we're going to have Ashley present virtually and coincide it with Dr. Thomas Joiner's presentation so they can have a discussion for the audience about acknowledging physical brain health in the midst of traditional psychotherapy.

Personally, I think it is edgy, a much-needed conversation and, what if that type of dialogue is the missing piece we need to have when evaluating why people die by su***de??

MILITARY leaders, chaplains, clinicians, and support teams:

➡️ DoD policy now requires a coordinated, tiered su***de postvention response system after a Service member death by su***de.

Directive-Type Memorandum DTM 25-004 (effective July 24, 2025 through July 24, 2026) outlines a three-tier DoD Su***de Postvention Response System and expectations for command-level response, including mobilizing a su***de response team within 72 hours (when practicable) and maintaining core competencies for response team members.

Postvention Collective, LLC's "Connecting a Stronger Chain" (Aug 12–13 | Springfield, MO) is built to strengthen exactly what this policy is aiming for: prepared people, safer messaging, and a sustained support chain for teammates, leaders, families, and friends.

EAP LEADERS & CLINICAL DIRECTORS: when a su***de death impacts a workplace, your program becomes one of the first places employees turn.

But su***de loss isn’t “standard grief.” It brings stigma, fear, blame, and isolation -- and if support isn’t su***de-loss informed, survivors often stop reaching out.

Postvention Collective, LLC's "Connecting a Stronger Chain" (Aug 12–13 | Springfield, MO) is built to strengthen postvention readiness so EAP teams can respond with clarity and care, without causing additional harm.

You’ll leave with:

➡️ Practical language for the first conversations after a su***de death
➡️ A clearer framework for su***de loss grief over time
➡️ Tools to support not only the bereaved employee, but also managers and teams navigating the ripple effects

If you serve employer groups, this training helps you deliver better outcomes -- and it helps your clients feel supported when it matters most.

You don't have to say the perfect thing.

But you do have to say something.

HR professionals and managers tell me all the time: "I froze. I didn't know what to say, so I said nothing." I understand the fear. Su***de loss is heavy, and the last thing you want to do is make it worse.

Here's the truth. Silence feels safer to you. It feels like abandonment to them.

📝 Here's exactly what to do when an employee loses someone to su***de:

✅ Say their person's name. "I'm so sorry about [name]." It matters more than you know.
✅ Acknowledge it directly. You don't have to use the word su***de. "This kind of loss is unlike anything else" is enough.
✅ Give them a soft landing. "Take the time you need. We'll figure out coverage together."
✅ Check in after two weeks. Grief doesn't end at the funeral.

❌ Avoid this common mistake: Returning to business as usual after a few days. Su***de grief is long. Your employee is still in it long after the casseroles stop coming.

Your intentions are good. I know that. But good intentions need a little direction in moments this heavy.

Postvention Collective trains HR teams and managers to respond with confidence, not fear, when su***de loss touches your workplace.

Want a place to start? Drop "TRAINING" in the comments or send me a message. Let's talk about what your team needs. 💜
