Come to the “Marché Adjame, the biggest in Abidjan, Ivory Coast “ with me:
After soaking it all in, I can honestly say the herbalism lessons I received in West Africa were an experience I’ll never forget. 🌿
My focus was on the African traditional approach to women’s health (fertility, menstrual cramps, womb wellness) , men’s health (sexual performance) and pain management. So I already knew that while I was there, I wanted to connect with local farmers and herbal experts, not just buy herbs, but actually build relationships with the people who know these plants.
I also needed to source some of the roots and herbs I’ll be using for tinctures I’ll be making soon. 👀🌿 More on that later!
One thing I learned quickly? Speaking the language can get you access. Speaking the dialect can get you IN. 😂
I speak French, but French alone wasn’t enough. After hours of walking around, asking questions, going here, going there, and navigating the market, I finally found the people I was looking for.
And let me give you a tip: if you’re planning to travel to an African country to source herbs or learn about traditional herbal medicine, find someone who is an expert in the area you’re researching AND speaks the local languages/dialects. It makes a huge difference.
Also… YOU BETTER WALK FAST IN THAT MARKET! 😂 Because if you don’t, people will push right past you. It is a FAST world in there!
I couldn’t record everything because the ladies who were guiding me warned me to be careful. Things can disappear quickly in a busy market. I kept my money and phone in my pocket and did NOT carry a purse.
This trip has already taught me so much about traditional herbal practices, sourcing, preparation, and the people behind these medicines.
