A new chapter begins at SIU Medicine.

Dr. Ian B.K. Martin officially begins today as provost and dean of SIU School of Medicine and CEO of SIU Medicine.

As he gets started, Dean Martin is embarking on a listening tour to connect with faculty, staff, learners, healthcare partners and community leaders throughout central and southern Illinois.

His goal? Listen, learn and build on SIU Medicine’s tradition of innovation, service and partnership to help improve health across the region.

💰 $200,000 vs. $308,394 💰 That’s the gap facing future medical students under new federal student loan limits.

In a recent article, SIUSOM alumna and Associate Dean for Student Affairs Dr. Haneme Idrizi shares what the new borrowing limits could mean for students pursuing a medical education.

The numbers put the challenge into perspective:

$308,394 – estimated cost of four years at SIUSOM, including tuition, living expenses and other required costs
$200,000 – new aggregate federal loan cap for medical school
$283,209 – average education loan debt for SIU’s Class of 2025
64% – percentage of the Class of 2025 whose borrowing exceeded the new $200,000 cap
80% – percentage of the Class of 2025 who utilized Grad PLUS loans, a federal loan option that has now been eliminated

As Dr. Idrizi explains, these funding gaps may leave more students relying on private loans and could create additional barriers for those without access to other financial resources. The U.S. has a shortage of physicians – especially in primary care – and this will impact rural populations even harder.

SIU School of Medicine wouldn’t be where it is today without the help of a local brewery. We’re hosting an event to celebrate that fact at 5 PM next Thursday, Sept. 10, and the public is invited.
The Reisch Brewery opened in 1849 and for 117 years operated on the exact site of the medical school’s education building, at 801 North Rutledge St. in Springfield.
Learn more about this fascinating story at “Beer, Brats & Beginnings.” Fifth-generation master brewer George Reisch will be on hand to discuss Reisch Gold Top’s golden age, share recipes and connect the lager’s lineage to today’s healthcare institutions and community support.

A day in the life of a surgeon can take many turns.

For Dr. Michael Neumeister, the day might start in the operating room and include time with patients, paperwork and teaching. But one day, it also included helping a patient with a flat tire in the parking garage — and showing a resident surgeon how to change it.

For those caring for a loved one with dementia, 38% of caregivers report physical stress and 59% of caregivers report emotional stress. And that’s just those who acknowledge it.

Dementia Caregiving 101, from the Smith Alzheimer’s Center, is designed to give caregivers practical tools and support for the challenges that come with dementia.

Across eight sessions, you’ll learn about:
