By 20 weeks of pregnancy, a baby's heart is roughly the size of a grape. Despite its size, specially trained sonographers can examine its four chambers, valves and major blood vessels, assess blood flow and identify findings that may warrant further evaluation.

These detailed examinations help maternal-fetal medicine specialists evaluate fetal development, detect potential complications and make informed decisions about care.

The sweet pictures are a bonus. The real achievement is capturing details small enough to miss, but important enough to change the course of care.
