Southern Illinois University School of Medicine was established in 1970 to assist the people of central and southern Illinois meet their health care needs. SIU has focused on training caring physicians and is internationally recognized for its innovative teaching and testing techniques. There are 72 students in each of four classes (with the first year in Carbondale). SIU is a national leader in t

he percentage of graduates who enter primary care. SIU has approximately 280 resident physicians training in 15 medical specialty areas. It also awards masters and doctoral degrees in pharmacology, physiology, and biochemistry and molecular biology, a combined MD-JD degree, a combined MD-MPH degree and a physician-assistant degree. SIU Medicine has more than 250 full-time faculty physicians in family medicine, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics, psychiatry and surgery. The school, its clinical practice, SIU Medicine, and its teaching hospitals, Memorial Medical Center and St. John’s Hospital, make Springfield an expanding academic medical center with considerable clinical, educational and research expertise. It has 34 building locations throughout central and southern Illinois.

When most people think about accessibility, they think about ramps, captions or accommodations.

But sometimes accessibility looks like a child finally being able to sing along.

Disney recently released animated songs performed in American Sign Language (ASL), creating a more inclusive way for children and families to experience music, storytelling and connection together.

“This is access, and it is beautiful,” says Jolene Goff, language services and patient rights advocate at SIU Medicine. “We all want to be able to sing along, understand what is being said and be included in the conversation.”

Goff says accessibility is about more than accommodations. It’s about making sure everyone can fully engage in the world around them despite differences.

“Access for everyone is important because it creates a stronger and more compassionate society where all people can participate and succeed.”

Following approval by the SIU System Board of Trustees, Dr. Ian Martin has been named the next dean and provost of SIU School of Medicine.

Dr. Martin brings a strong background in academic medicine, clinical leadership and physician development, with experience leading across medical education, emergency medicine and complex health systems. He currently serves in leadership roles at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Health System.

As SIU School of Medicine continues its mission to improve the health of the people and communities we serve, Dr. Martin's leadership will help shape the future of medical education, research and patient care across central and southern Illinois.

Dr. Martin will officially begin Sept. 1, succeeding Dr. Jerry Kruse, whose 43 years of service to SIU School of Medicine have left a lasting impact on our students, residents, patients, faculty, staff and communities.

We are grateful for Dr. Kruse's leadership and service and look forward to welcoming Dr. Martin to SIU School of Medicine.
