“Lyft Pass for Public Funding exists so individuals in Medicaid HCBS programs can seamlessly access Lyft within the framework of Medicaid’s rigorous requirements. But a rider’s own bank account status was getting in the way of a ride their program had already paid for. That’s a barrier we could remove, so we did,” Yen said. “It’s a small technical change with an outsized impact for people who depend on this program for getting to work, navigating their communities independently and daily living

Lyft is taking steps to allow more people with intellectual and developmental disabilities to access rides paid for through Medicaid home and community-based services programs.

The insurer’s new system started in July just as Gov. JB Pritzker signed a new law meant to curb the growing trend of health insurance companies automatically reducing fees paid to doctors. But the new law doesn’t go into effect until 2028.

Governor Pritzker has proclaimed October 2026 as Assistive Technology Month in Illinois and encourages all residents to become aware of the many ways in which assistive technologies contribute to the health, independence, and happiness of our friends, neighbors, family members, and co-workers with disabilities.

The expo was aimed at people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Along with job placement and training services, groups offering transportation, health, legal, financial and technical support attended, as well as state agencies.

State Senator Seth Lewis noted that agencies from the secretary of state to the treasurer’s offices and the Illinois Department of Public Health have specialized programs for disabled residents but “nobody really knows about it.”

Diaonna Cain, Ray Graham Association administrator of employment services, said the disability advocacy group has found jobs for suburbanites ranging from retail to hospitality and other fields.

“They want to work, and they want to be part of the community,” she said.
